Process Design Matrix and Summary
McDonalds is a fast food restaurant with worldwide recognition in the food industry. With more than 34,000 restaurants in over 118 countries, it has become a main stay and a standard bearer for the multitude of restaurants attempting to become and remain successful in the industry. McDonalds brand mission is to be the customers favorite place and way to eat and drink. Many other restaurants have and continue to emulate and duplicate the process and procedures in order to compete. However, very few have even come close to the success that McDonalds has experienced. This matrix and summary will recognize the approach and process used by the McDonalds Corporation that has enabled them to deliver the award winning standard that has become accepted worldwide.
About 70% of all restaurants are owned by individual operators. The remaining 30% are owned and operated by the McDonalds Corporation itself. However, the standard is the same regardless of the owner. Each restaurant maintains a standard menu of about 20 items grouped into individual meals. Each item is subject to be mixed and matched in any way the customer wants. As the customer orders a particular meal a particular way. The staff in the production area (kitchen area) assemble the meal as requested. As the meal is assembled, additional staff bags or delivers the meal to the customer. Orders are assembled in somewhat of an assembly line and the “runners “are tasked to deliver the meals to the customer.
