Salmonella is an intestinal infection that was discovered in 1885 by Theobald Smith and named after Daniel E. Salmon. It has a rod shape. Salmonella can be transferred to people by eating raw meat because some animals are contaminated with salmonella. There are about 1.4 million cases annual, 40,000 a year, and more than 400 deaths due to salmonella in the United States. Most reported cases of food borne illnesses are due to salmonella poisoning but the infection is small only about 15- to 20 cells. One of the things that started food borne illnesses is fast food restaurants.
Salmonella can cause three illnesses. The first one is gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach or intestines. This illness can show up within 6 to 72 hours and sometimes it can take a long time. Some of the symptoms of gastroenteritis are vomiting, headache, and joint pain. The second illness is typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is a disease caused by bacteria. Some of the symptoms are pain and fever. The last illness is bacterium. Bacterium is whenever there are bacteria in the blood. However, there are no symptoms caused by bacterium. A person with salmonella will recover from one to two weeks but they will still have it in the system for about two months.
Anyone can be infected by salmonella but it is more common on children under five years old. There is no way that a person can tell if the food is contaminated by salmonella. Some of the foods that are contaminated are eggs, raw meat, dairy products, and unwashed fruits. In order to prevent salmonella from transferring people have to cook the food correctly and washing hands. Salmonella exist in every kitchen and by always cleaning the kitchen salmonella can be killed. In California, there was a restaurant that had to be shut down do to four people getting sick of salmonella. The restaurant was called “Don Perico Mexican and seafood restaurant.”
