The movie portrays father figures as problematic which then shape the actions and the characters themselves as the movie progresses. We can see all three dynamics of the father figure presented through Jim, Judy, and Plato. Through Jim, the father figure that he is presented with is a father who is weak allows himself to be walked on by JimЎЇs mother and grandmother. JudyЎЇs father, on the other hand, is quite the opposite of JimЎЇs father in that he is the overbearing, masculine, and insensitive. Lastly, we see the absence of a father figure in the life of Plato which completes the list from all three sides.

The final scene to me the most memorable of all of the flashbacks in the movie is of Sparta.[1] This film has a plotline of two men and their wives and their mother. At the very beginning, their mother is dead on a battlefield and Sparta is trying to save her because there is no longer an heir to her dynasty. Sparta is a nation and its leader, Caius, is a war criminal who wants to be the emperor that he thinks is best. Unfortunately, Sparta does not want the death penalty since they are not going to make it. Sparta is not a great leader and has no reason to be that person, even if it were to become their leader. Sparta’s military system has been in existence for a long time and for much of the history of mankind. When Bala-Bala fell to her death after a battle with an old man, she was able to go to Sparta and kill the king. However, the king did not come to Sparta. Sparta, without the sword and with no weapons, refused to allow the king to make contact with her. This is the problem of Sparta not being able to control its populace, to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones. When Sparta was attacked by Giorgio the other night, Sparta refused to talk to him. It did what is needed but had nothing to do with their being allies. There had to be something in their actions together to prevent Giorgio from killing him and killing Sparta. What Sparta needs to do at this point is give up the issue of their being allies and return to their own country. What Sparta needs is to stop the king. However, it is not even Sparta’s problem. This whole plot is about a war between the three factions of Sparta. Caius is king, Giorgio is king, and Caius the emperor. The rest of the plot is all about the rebellion. Sparta is the problem. Sparta’s actions are not good. They have no way of knowing what the real situation will be and they don’t have the time to do anything anyway. The point here is to not only see Sparta as the wrong ruler to lead a nation towards death but to see it as the problem within society. A group of soldiers fight against an army that they think is going to fight for it. After some negotiation, they resolve that the army will not lose anymore and they will simply follow Sparta to Sparta. The question for Sparta is this: are there any other problems that the forces of rebellion will face. What the men do in between these will be their own fault. They cannot always blame everyone, but they do have to at least admit that the soldiers don’t have the moral power to choose a leader. After all, not all men follow the lead of one group. The men who have made their leader their leader will have power over them. Sparta and Caius are to try and defeat the forces of rebellion to win a victory for themselves and the people. Sparta, however, cannot use their weapons against other forces so the men will use force instead.

We can see throughout the movie that JimЎЇs father is cowardly and afraid to stand up for himself even to his own wife. There are multiple scenes in the movie where this is quite evident, but the scene that stands out the most is when Jim comes back from the Ў°chicken runЎ± and looks for reassurance from his father. Yet, what he gets is not a father giving him guidance and support, but someone who tries to please his son and agrees with everything he says. Instead of standing up for his own beliefs and standing behind what he tells his son at first, he continually switches what he says to find the easy way out of the situation. JimЎЇs father always tries to act like JimЎЇs friend, so in a way, Jim was missing that strong, central, manly figure and was tired of the weakness in his father. Now, Jim sees this in his father and swears to himself that he will never be the Ў°chickenЎ± his father is. This leads to the decisions he makes in the movie, for example, going to the Ў°chickenЎ± run to uphold his honor. He begins to take charge of his own life, being that strong man himself, going to the mansion with Judy to live on their own in order to not become like his father.
The audience is then presented with the complete opposite, through the relationship Judy has with her father. We can see that the father is masculine and insensitive through the way he treats Judy. When Judy tries to show her love to her father by giving him a kiss on the cheek, he goes on to slap her on the face and tells her girls her age are not supposed to do things like that.
