Fear of war – Since all adults had the right to vote the government had to listen to peoples opinion. They feared a repeat of the last war and the new technology involved . Without doubt the British public wanted peace.
Fear of communism – A common saying at the time was ” better Hitlerism than communism.” Many people thought that there was no point of fighting Hitler if the result would be communists came to power in Europe.
Too weak to fight – At this time Hitlers propaganda encouraged Britain and France to think that Nazi forces were stronger than they really were.
At the same time he armed forces chiefs were warning Chamberlain one more than one occasion that Britain was too weak to fight.
No reliable allies – With the United States not wanting to get involved in Europes affairs and France politically divided and Italy already on Hitlers side, Britain had no allies .
Empire might spilt up – At the time over the war of Czechoslovakia South Africa told Britain that they would not get involved. What if that happened and how long would it be until the rest of Britain empire said it would not get involved in Europes affairs
Hitler was a reasonable guy – Chamberlain believed that Hitler was making intense speeches to gain publicity but was a man who would choose negotiation rather than conflict.
Versailles was too harsh – In the 1930s the public believed the treaty was too harsh and that Hitler had grievances , but why change one part of the treaty when Hitler wont resist changed the whole thing.
The empire was Britains may concern – Any war in Europe would frighten the security of her Empire. The Empire came first so appeasement was the most sensible thing to do.
