National Protection and Programs Directorate
The National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) was established in 2003. An
integrated approach is used to reduce risks involving physical/virtual threats. There are four
divisions within the NPPD: Federal Protective Services (FPS), Office of Cybersecurity and
Communications (CS&C), Office of Infrastructure Protection (IP) and US-VISIT (US-Visitor
and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology program).
The Federal Protective Service (FPS) law enforcement agency provides protection to
thousands of Federal facilities and the millions of government and civilian workers occupying
them by detecting, deterring, disrupting, and investigating threats. FPS uses a risk management
process and employs MegaCenter, a central communication and coordination center among law
enforcement personnel providing security countermeasure monitoring.
The Office of Cybersecurity and Communications (CS&C) is responsible for enhancing
the security, resilience, and reliability of the Nation’s cyber and communications infrastructure.
CS&C is responsible to ensure the federal “.gov” domain is not compromised, reduce or
eliminate disruptions to critical information infrastructure and serves as a 24/7 cyber monitoring,
incident response, and management center. Five divisions within CS&C aid in its mission: The
Office of Emergency Communications, The National Cybersecurity and Communications
Intergration Center, Stakeholder Engagement and Cyber Infrastructure Resilience, Federal
Network Resilience and Network Security Deployment.
The Office of Infrastructure Protection (IP) leads and coordinates national programs
