The novel the Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s. The decade of the 1920s particularly in the United-States can be defined as one of the most recognized periods of time, seeing that the women in the American Society were no longer concerned with the ethical values. The women carried a rebellious behavior and they were caught up in the midst of finding the best suitor to pursue a life in the American Dream. The women of this era can be portrayed as extremely foolish and easily used by men. The female characters from the novel bring about an essential role highlighting the era of the 1920s Reading through Fitzgeralds novel one can determine the purpose of the female characters through their acts and speech. It is clear that Fitzgerald focuses on the attitudes and characteristic of his female characters and introduces the reader the new female aside from the Gibson girl. This essay will clearly discuss the role of the female characters which are, Daisy, Jordan Baker and Myrtle.

The Great Gatsby is a fascinating work that deals with the corruption of female character. The women of the 1920s, took a step forward and with chins raised up high in society and this explores this circumstance women of the era detached themselves from moral ethical ladylike figure. In the novel it was alright for women to drink and conduct themselves widely at parties just as men do. They began in society to take total control of their lives in society. Daisy was treated inferior to her relationship with Tom and the funny thing is she allowed Tom to dominate her. She was degraded by Toms affair and she did nothing to stop it from happening. However Daisy Liberated herself from her moral values and decided to do the same. She found a way of bringing Toms ego a bit to the pits and she had him right where she wanted him. She was now in control over the relationship. Fitzgerald comments on the changing role and the attitudes of women from the 1920s. Both Daisy and Jordan break freely and flirted with men. “Im paralyzed with happiness” page ( ). “Im glad its a girl. I hope shell be a pool – thats the best thing a girl can be in the world, a beautiful little pool. It demonstrates that women werent regarded as equals.
