Gender role(s) refers to the part played or the various functions performed by either the male or the female genders. Gender is greatly influenced by various factors such as; education, culture, peers as well as family relations. Education plays a vital role in shaping peoples beliefs and ideas with regards to what each gender can do. Education has enabled both male and female gender to acquire skills and expertise in the vast field of professions today. There are still many issues and norms that are found in various institutions such as workplaces that still limit what role that is supposed to be played by a particular gender such as leadership and mechanical jobs being (Karsten, 2006).

Gender in education
Education has caused tremendous changes in the beliefs and attitudes that people held in the past. This has not been easy though because of the various stereotypes and gender biased materials that were being used as instructional materials in schools and institutions (Klein, 2007). Due to the attitudes and beliefs acquired it made things more difficult and harder for the female gender as they were the ones most affected. The gender roles created in their mind or in their attitudes give males a certain role they are supposed to play which is different from what females should do (Klein, 2007). Boys were encouraged to read more than girls, girls were limited to the number of careers to choose from, and also the level of education attained for the male gender was higher than for female (Ishikida, 2005).
