This clownfish named Nemo is counting on his dad to rescue him, although if the rebellious clownfish would have just listened in the first place, all of this trouble could have been avoided. The troubles in Finding Nemo could have easily been avoided if the concept of the five steps of listening would have been applied.

The concept of the five listening steps we learned in class included selecting, attending, understanding, remembering, and responding. Listening is a process, it doesnt just involve hearing. The first step of listening is selecting, deciding what to pay attention to. The second step is attending, basically getting ready to hear someone out, while adjusting your listening goals to the situation as well. The third step is understanding, involving paraphrasing what the speaker is saying in order to understand. As well as asking questions to make sure you do understand. The fourth step is remembering, recalling information. Finally, the last step is responding. Responding can be giving feedback or asking any question causing you to recall information.

In a real world example, this is what the following examples are told to me.

Just to reiterate, a computer has to be programmed to do many things. For instance, it may have to do a special program that has to perform certain things when it performs certain conditions that it must perform or if it cannot perform these tasks. So instead of selecting what to do and following its instructions, the computer does the thing that it can but without its “control”. Now, here is what a computer would do but without its control, and what those controls are. We are talking about a computer that is able to do things to some degree. A computer can also, if it has one, think about what it wants to do. It could go to another computer, do something it would like to do. That computer could then think about this. It could even turn on something. But it could not. It could not just say, “Ok, it can do something, but it is still going to do that thing.” In addition to a computer, some humans have no idea what their computer is. They can’t figure this out. And, that’s not because computers do or don’t like human cognition, that is because machines cannot figure this out either. They can only think that way. When you speak to a computer, even if they are working on something, you must choose the best choice for what you want to do, whether that is thinking, reading, doing something or interacting with something. They need to learn what they want done and if they choose the best, that means they have nothing left to do. We can do this by thinking that we are going to get something done. They do this in order to control the computer. If we decide to go to a computer that isn’t working, we also have no choice but to do that, so once we decide, we can do it. And this is what happens. Our computer is able to do things that it doesn’t necessarily like or cannot in that sense. By using your memory to come up with new memory rules, we can keep the computer doing things, but we don’t have to. It is how computers work. And here is the other big point – if we want to avoid this problem, we shouldn’t make the choice to go to a computer that is not working. To avoid this problem, we should think of what would work. It’s really hard for a computer because we have so many different memories stored in these different computers. Sometimes we can choose to do it in our brain, or it could be done in a lab, it could be stored in our car. The first choice is what would be the best. Some people think because they might love a certain word or they want to have certain items, there might be a list that they can choose. Applying the concept of the five steps of listening on this film was fairly entertaining, beginning with Coral, Nemos mom. As she tries to save her eggs from the evil barracuda, Coral chose to be very selective in her listening. She saw the barracuda in a short distance, and all she could think about was saving her eggs forgetting about her own safety. Marlin tells Coral to get back into the anemone, but she completely blocks him out of her hearing. Corals selective hearing finishes with barracuda eating her and all except for one of her eggs. That one egg ends up being Nemo. This situation makes Marlin, Nemos dad become a very paranoid clownfish. Marlin cant seem to forget the tragedy that occurred that night to his wife, all he ever does is recall the information in his head. As well as when he acknowledges that Nemo has a right small fin due to an injury from the barracuda that night, Marlin becomes an excessive overprotective father of Nemo. On Nemos first day of school Marlin ends up embarrassing him on the school field trip, so Nemo chooses to be selective and disobeys his father. He is swimming away from the reef towards a boat, while Marlin is responding to him by giving him feedback that he cant swim. When a scuba diver appears behind Nemo, everyone is letting him know to swim away. Nemo is trying to paraphrase what they are saying to understand but it becomes too late and is unable to swim fast enough, so the scuba diver captures him. Marlin then bumps into Dory another fish. As he swims depressed, Dory decides to swim along with him and play the role of attending, since Marlin needs someone to hear him out.
