Innocence often has to do with the fondness and adoration displayed in relationships. The movie, Love Actually, starring Hugh Grant, focuses on different ways of making love work by showing the lives of different people. The film, from time to time, shows a little boy who is falling in love with a girl in his school. He thinks that the best way to win her heart is to become a rock star and so he joins his school band as a drummer. He practices the drum everyday until its time for the Christmas concert where he plays his best. At first, the girl does not notice him and he is heartbroken and to make matters worse, shes leaving the country. He goes to the airport to find her, and, when he does, he kisses her and lets her know that he likes her. While the film does not tell the audience what happens in the future, it can be assumed that there will be a new love blossoming.
In Gary Sotos “Oranges,” the speaker is describing the first time he walks with a girl. He is at the tender age of twelve and this simple act of innocence takes place on a cold, grey day in December. As the two walk together, they stop in a drugstore and, being the typical boy, the speaker “asked what she wanted” (27). When she shows him the chocolate and he realizes that he cannot afford it, he then does a quick barter with the shop lady and exchanges his lone nickel and one of his oranges for the chocolate. The two continue walking – hand in hand – for two more blocks and then stop to eat the chocolate and the orange.
Throughout the entire poem, Soto captures the feeling and power of adolescent love using contrasting imagery and symbolism. The contrasting imagery is expressed in the lines where the speaker peels his orange “that was so bright against/the gray of December”(52-53). The oranges can be used as a symbol to represent the fruits of young love, as that is what the author is seeking to portray.
Besides the age of the speaker, his choice of words and the way that he tells his story clearly illustrates his youth, his simplicity and his honesty. The poem exudes innocence and first time love, especially when the speaker describes the way the girl “came out pulling/At her gloves, face bright” (13-14). During their stop at the drugstore, it is obvious that the shop ladys intent is to help make their love blossom by helping out the speaker with the purchase of the dime costing chocolate. It can be said that children tend to have more pure feelings for one another than adults because their lives are simple and uncomplicated. Could this be the reason that the shop lady helps the speaker out? Is she living vicariously through his blossoming romance? Whatever the reason is, it aids the speaker in pleasing his girl and also further cements the resonating tone of untarnished love throughout Sotos poem.
Sotos, p. 8-9, is a poem that was taken from H. L. Gilbert’s short story, The First Girl, and it has been translated into English as the original piece by Soto de Soto in the early 1900s. It’s a kind of poetic interpretation of what is said about the first girl’s first love. The meaning of The First Girl is in part unknown because it was published in a short story collection in 1905 by L’Oreal de la Sotte (and later I read it on my copy of Goya). In many of those short stories the poet had a very different story in mind than what you would find in the poem. For example, I believe that at the beginning of this story, the girl, known in some cases as the first love, and all the companions, when she was 17, were a love of her parents. The story reads that “she was a man, and had a father.” Although, when an accident happened, the wife soon “became a wife,” and her husband, to a certain extent, became a wife. When there is a danger for the two wives it is quite clear to a writer that the children of the woman (the father or the mother) are the children whom she brings with her to her parents’ homes, so she can carry out her love of the children and thus she and the girl may be the first couple. These two love characters are also present in most romantic romances: Romeo and Juliet, the first lady and the first man (who was often called a “saint” to make a new lover in one’s heart) in Soto de Soto ” and Soto de Soto and #8222 & #8223. There is also a romantic idea of family which is important to Soto as it means that both love is expressed by an adult (a wife and child) but only when the other is a teenager (or an adult who is married to the youth of the man). The story concludes with the girl, having once been born in the presence of her parents, returning home after ten years at seventeen. This is the first love story of the Soto family and it is a great illustration of their story but not a romantic one. The Soto family is an important source of inspiration for the characters and it is one of the poems in the novel that has been described as being about the first love in the Soto family and Soto’s “love love” and its relationship with her. It is possible that all of the poems in the novel are written and may contain a number of different interpretations. Perhaps Soto would have preferred that one of the poems that bears her name be taken from the first romance of that era, for example Love in the Dark which was published in 1889 (and published one year after Soto’s first love tale was started). The story tells that the girls at Soto’s childhood home were not only concerned for their lives but their love for their future. This may be true because there are already stories in the Soto family books which describe how when the first person who finds herself in love finds oneself looking for her, her eyes would be shut. I think that the Soto family may feel a bit lonely and may seem less like a family than they were before Soto was born.
