Getting Hired
Hy Vee didn’t sound like the best job to me after the first day of training, but I needed something more hands on and that I could look forward to coming to each and every day. Somewhere teaching me skills I could use in my future, and maybe even a career. Not a place just packing food on shelves and answering to the voice over the intercom saying, “Cleanup on aisle twelve”. Later that day, I found out the place for me was at GP Customs. It wasnt till then at GP Customs that it dawned on me that working on high end cars, doing different types of customizations, and owning a business just like GP is what I wanted to do as a career for the rest of my life.

Walking into GP was all and more than I expected. The things they had for cars there were endless. Everything from rims, stereos, sub-woofers, and much more. The possibilities of things to do to your car here was overwhelmingly awesome. As I walked up to the front office, a man in a dri-fit red T- shirt came through the doorway to greet me. “You must be Greg’s son.” He said with a big smile on his face. He brought me back to his office and started asking me the basic things any employer would ask someone who they would consider hiring: what my time schedule looked like, when I was available, what my interest/ hobbies were, had I had a job before this, have I had experience working on cars, and etcetera. Man, was I nervous! But why? Why was I so nervous getting interviewed here at GP when Hy Vee was a breeze to get interviewed. Ah, it must have been because this was something I actually wanted and would love doing.

“Let me show you some of our projects our shop is working on at the moment. Come on back.” Said Robert. I followed him back through a door with bright red lettering proclaiming “EMPLOYEES ONLY”. As we got back into the work bays, two cars sat back there, a brand new 2013 Cadillac Escalade and 2013 BMW M3. These cars combined together were easily over 150 thousand dollars, and that just amazed me. Just the M3 alone was a site a car junkie would love to see and get excited about seeing driving down the road, but I got to see it up close, sit in it, and start it up. This was something that was just beyond anything I had ever done and made me realize how amazing this job would be for me.

Now it was time to actually see what GP Customs did to the cars. Robert showed me that the M3 was getting a built-in mini Ipad for a radio, clear protective film that would go over the front bumper, hood, both fenders, and mirrors, and was also getting twenty percent tint over all the windows except the front windshield since that is illegal in the state of Nebraska. Next, he explained to me what was going to be getting done to the Escalade. The Escalade was getting a Pioneer 7” touch screen, Addictive audio speakers and tweeters, and three ten inch Addictive audio sub-woofers.

What happened next blew my mind and was a moment in life I will never forget. “Are you busy for the next few hours?” Asked Robert. Of course I wasnt, so I replied by saying, “Well, of course not”. Robert began
