The First Noble Truth that the Buddha taught was that to reach enlightenment, you must recognise that life is suffering.
The Buddha said that life is full of suffering and that this suffering may be mental or physical.
People often feel sad, lonely or depressed, an example being when you lose someone through death. This is mental suffering and can come in many forms.
The Buddha said that the suffering of birth, old age, sickness and death is unavoidable. This is physical suffering and can also come in many forms.
The First Noble Truth teaches that people can suffer when they feel that they cant satisfy their needs and wants. One can also suffer because of their attachment to pleasures that do not last.

The Buddha did not deny that there are also many moments of happiness, especially from friends and family. But all of these kinds of happiness are impermanent and when one loses them, one suffers. People often remain unaware of suffering of life because they are distracted by temporary pleasures, these could be materialistic or emotional.
