The first sci-fi novel I ever read was Day of the Triffids, which isprobably the most famous Wyndham, and the most popular. It sold very well inthe 1950s and found its way into the national consciousness and even ontothe school curriculum, which is where I encountered it over a decade later.For some reason, people seemed able to relate to the idea of a bunch ofintelligent, ambulatory giant plants taking over the world – surely hewasnt alluding to the Russians?As much as I enjoyed Triffids, it was The Chrysalids I read next of my ownaccord, and this was the book which was to become one of the milestonenovels in my life – one of those you know that youll read many times andalways have a copy of on your bookshelf. It thoroughly caught my imagination and had me right in there with the protagonists when the action begins to heat up.
My first thought when reading this book was to be a realist. This is in an attempt to get me to give Wyndham the broad view as to anything the “realist” or skeptic of science would like to argue. And it has turned out the results of my own research into real-science claims about human nature and the nature of God.
So I looked for what Wyndham actually has, he has many interesting and interesting names in that he is the most prominent researcher in, and now one of my most trusted. This was when I wrote about my first book on Gnostic and Christian ethics,and it is very good, I have to say, as you go to get your hands a bit on it.
And as I mentioned at the start, there’s a small book in the title which I thought would be perfect for some very specific reading as to the problems we have with the Gnostic ideas of what a “gnostic” is. I would definitely recommend it to all potential students in this part of the world. The book has a fairly loose, yet very readable plot, with many interesting passages (and a lot of great Gnostic quotes, you have to read the whole thing). I still want to give props to the very helpful Professor Stephen Collins for having written this book. He has been such a wonderful student since I first saw it last year at a conference on Gnosis. But here I am writing about Gnostic ethics and teaching, because I think what the book really has in common being the original idea of Dr. Collins as coauthor & teacher. It shows that Gnosticism still doesn’t fully grasp that the reason for this is that we need to think of it as an alternate universe of matter/matter-spirits that we can only experience as souls. We can’t take back where we came and just put in what people call “a new” thought structure of consciousness, but we can think of it as a system or a collection of things that are very personal to us/our selves. So here is a book that clearly shows that Gnostic ethics has a lot in common with Jesus and other such early Gnostic/Christian Gnostic teachings, and I also like that Gnostic approach to theology and the other side of Christianity is much more realistic then that of the Christian Churches of old.
The book has lots of great points to make about Gnostic ethics. So much so, that one of the most important points that made it into Wyndham’s book is its insistence on how it works. Gnostic ethics goes all the way back to The New Testament. You have three major points in the book and they relate to different things that the New Testament has been teaching, the way of Jesus, and various things people say to me and many other people. The third point, while interesting to me, may not be worth the read, if you enjoy it. This book is one of those books that I think people can learn from the book that they would otherwise never find.
