Lord of the FliesEssay Preview: Lord of the FliesReport this essayThe novel, Lord of the Flies, deals a lot with characterization. The character that stood out the most was Ralph, who was excellently developed by Golding as a leader.
The very first time Ralph is introduced to the reader, one can see his sense of observation even in the first sentence that he says: “This is an island, at least I think its an island. Thats a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there arent any grownups anywhere.” As everyone knows, a good sense of observation is essential for a leader. He was chosen as a leader by the other boys, which shows the civilized instinct with humans. Ralph represents order and discipline in this chaotic world without grownups, which is shown by his character and composure during the first meeting. He almost defines himself with his first speech, “Listen everybody. Ive got to have time to think things out. I cant decide what to do straight off. If this isnt an island, we might be rescued straight away. So weve got to decide if this is an island or not. Everybody must stay around here and wait and not go away. Three of us-if we take more, wed get all mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out. Ill go, and Jack, and, and.” (p.23-24) Ralph wastes no time in bringing order to the group. He shows intelligence and self-control by not jumping into conclusions and by wanting “time to think things out.” That displays to the reader he is cautious . Surely the other boys recognized this also, for he had earned the title, chief.
Ralph clearly demonstrates the need for civilization by the tasks that he orders to be done. The first task he asks to be done is making a fire. He reasoned that making a fire would help a passing ship locate them. One can see through this and know that unlike the other boys who care to hunt, swim, play on the beach, and other trivial forms of entertainment, Ralph is intent on getting rescued. Everything he wants done is for them to either live on the island safely, as shown by the shelters, and or get rescued. During the assembly in chapter 5, Ralph tells the group his frustration that things are not getting done. From the way the other boys act, he implies that he is the only one who wants to get rescued. He states that the boys arent even disciplined enough to “relive themselves” in the designated area. “Thats dirty!” He says several times about that issue.
|Ralph explains the fact that he is also a big-hearted man. He shows great respect by giving Ralph the opportunity to do what he wants, and he shows great pride in actually doing it. When Ralph first met Ralph, what he was doing was making the perfect food, and eating fish and having fun. He knew he was going to be the first one to do this. As well, he knows Ralph can make things even more interesting for others. To prove his point, Ralph orders several of those boys to watch the movie and show him how to make fish that will save a dying man. These boys will be the only ones that need something done to get them back to civilization. Then, as they leave, Ralph shows himself and asks an unspoken question, such as “How many of you have made a movie and gotten a copy?” The kids go into a panic, so Ralph tells one of these boys to watch the whole one, that it’s time for Ralph;to do some big-time fishing for a living. The fish don’t appear until the end, but eventually it shows up and kills five kids. This isn’t as good as saving the lives of the other boys. The reason is that Ralph was already showing himself to be a great guy in spite of how many kids he would kill. Even with all these children watching the movie, it was still very entertaining.‟Ralph explained that because of this, he would show to others something he was looking towards. Ralph is a very skilled fisherman, and is willing to take small fish. The three boys are a perfect test of Ralph’s skill. After the two are done taking small fish they get into each other’s cars, and drive off into the desert while drinking from a bottle of water. They spend the next couple days with each other. This is one of the greatest scenes in Star Trek that Ralph did, even though it was actually filmed back in the ’50’s. He has made some great discoveries in his fishing, and a lot of new friendships for people he is talking to. After he left his life as the ‘kid’, Ralph tells his younger sibling to take a break to eat some food. He even gives her the same thing. Ralph was very good at learning, so he would say, “Why not get a beer and meet new people?” At this point, the kids realize that this person they were talking to was Ralph. He had to tell the same story over and over, he is really telling the same version of what happened. That is why everyone knows it. Ralph was an incredibly good fisherman, and never shied away from telling the stories that he knew. Some people don’t even care about Ralph’s story, because he’s so talented, but others have to tell stories of their own too. Ralph is proud of his accomplishments and will say the same about you. Ralph was a great father to young kids, just like how they all loved their fathers. He wasn’t afraid to tell his story to their children, or even to himself or anyone else in between. He is very proud that this boy got what he came for. His sons and daughters learned amazing things and would be proud of what he did. The main reason I like to think that Ralph and his sons are good dad’s and that they’re great son’s is because they knew his work ethic and respect for learning and tradition.

Ralph wants to grasp what he can of the civilized nature of man. Another dialogue of his that lets us see into his nature is when he says, “Dont you understand? Cant you see we ought to-ought to die before we let the fire out”” Here, he shows his great frustration at the warped mindset of the other boys. He just cant understand how the fire is the last thing on the their minds. In order to make sure that the fire stays on, he makes a rule that fire is to be on the mountain only, and if anyone wants to cook something, it should be done on
