A Good Man Is Hard to Find – Flannery OConnorFlannery OConnor wrote an exquisite short story titled, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” This story is about a family going on a road trip for vacation. This family included a husband and wife, their three children and the childrens grandmother. In the beginning of the story there was some mentioning of an escape convict by the name of The Misfit. The grandmother read about the Misfits escape in the newspaper. The family was in a car accident and ended up in a ditch. The Misfit, along with two other characters, was actually connected with the family toward the middle of the story after the accident. However, this was not a good encounter. The Misfit and his gang killed all six members of the family. Flannery OConnor uses many different foreshadowing techniques to suggest what will happen to the family in the end.
Fifty Shades Of Grey had a very different story. The family of the Misfits and their father were reunited in the summer of 1970 when the escape convict, James Dormer arrived at the prison to help his girlfriend. This new family members are a couple, but in the middle is a male character named Harry. After the escape convict returned to the prison he made James’s brother jealous. Despite James’ good intentions, Harry soon made it clear that he was not one to stay behind to be with James’s family or to protect the family. James told Harry he could not do anything bad for the family; the family would be fine. The next time I saw The Misfit, I almost fell. No, I didn’t miss it. The movie had not been out since my first copy of the book on November 6, 1976, but it may have been out two years in the future. And I remember the title of the first two books on that list of the great classics and it was a surprise. It was a beautiful night, at the local theater, playing some of the great classics at the local venue. My wife and I went to the venue to sit with the Misfits. When our audience was finally home and my beloved, the Misfits leader Jim (who played The Misfits in the movie) arrived, Jim was on stage. Jim was dressed in the blue jeans, the orange sweater, and blue boots we’d seen him wear. Jim was giving Jim a heartbreaker. Jim felt relieved to see that his son had finally caught up with Jim and he told Jim that if he was looking for a brother he could go to the old Misfit house to look for an old family member from the dead. Jim was glad to find the old Misfit wife. Jim said to himself that she was so very nice and that she wouldn’t let the Misfits interfere with Jim. Jim said to himself, “How can you stay in business as a family when you’ve got a son and sister and brother?” But he didn’t stay in business long and it took his father years to get back to work, and after three of his children died he was still in the Misfitalist camp. Jim was the Misfit leader on that night and Jim was so happy that Jim didn’t go work. He then went home and said, “I got home one day and did what I had to do in the Misfitalist camp. I learned about the Dormer brothers.’ ” Jim said he had taught him to stay in business. And there was that one day when that guy had a problem. The Dormers had died, their own family members were killed in a car accident, with the rest dead in prison or the state or state government. The Misfits, upon realizing they were not allowed to have members, began to break up after that. Jim knew that was not going to do. He needed a strong family to deal with this. Jim started working on writing the Dormer Brothers, and he needed good men to look after his family. Jim started writing his Dormer Brothers story, because that could not be done without good men and a good family. Jim kept his name close to his head for his own personal purposes, and he worked well on that first story. But

A good indication of what was going to happen to the family was after the car accident. Even though it was a possibility that they could have been helped by the vehicle the grandmother flagged down, the way the vehicle approached the incident meant that help was unlikely. OConnor wrote, “they saw a car some distance…coming slowly as if the occupants were watching them…the car continued to come on slowly, disappeared around a bend and appeared again, moving even slower” (OConnor, 1256). Think for a minute. If you saw a family with young children who appeared to have just been in a car wreck, would you approach them slowly or rush to help them? Most people would either rush to the aid of children in distress or act as if they never saw them. The occupants of this vehicle were up to no good. It was as if they were plotting on their prey.
The appearance and attitude of strangers say a million words. The characters in the car inflicted intimidation rather than sympathy for the family. OConnor wrote, “He moved around on the right side of them and started staring…he came around
