RevelationEssay Preview: RevelationReport this essayIn Flannery OConnors “Revelation,” she introduces the main character, Mrs. Turpin, with some disliked characteristics. Mrs. Turpin is a middle-classed, property owning, happily married women. She believes that she is the perfect woman in every way under Gods eyes. This remains until she is hit with reality by a young girl by the name of Mary Grace.
Mrs. Turpin is a highly egotistical elderly lady. She thinks very highly of herself. She does so by criticizing black people by saying, “but niggers dont want to pick cotton any more. You cant get the white folks to pick it and now you cant get the niggers-because they got to be right up there with the white folks” (42). This shows that she believes that she is over the black race and that black race can not strive for success in life. But to receive some sympathy for being this way and not to be credentialed as two-faced, she expresses her gratitude for the niggers by saying, “And when they come in from the field , I run out with a bucket of icewater”
Mrs. Turpin possesses self-righteous characteristics as well. She believes she is Gods angel. Her actions and thoughts seem to help her believe that she always does and acts in the right manner. She is convinced that she is able to talk to Jesus. She thanks Jesus for everything she has been given and still believes that she is over other people. She thanks him by saying, “Thank you, Jesus, for making everything the way it is! It could have been different!” (101) She believes that he has given her the world unlike some other people. Mrs. Turpin is also very judgmental. She tends to analyze a person by his or her appearance within a couple of minutes. As she walked into the doctors office, she tagged some harsh names to some people in the waiting room like “white trash” and “ugly girl” (22). She has not even talked to them and she starts
n’ f#$$ing nervous on what to say. The first time she gave a medical talk, she was taken seriously and apologized to all that she had offended.
“She’s been in therapy for a few months and she hasn’t done anything as bad as the patients and she’s just getting better! She’s talking about all her life and she can’t think about anything other than her self esteem, emotions and all. We know she can be as self-accepting as we have seen her in, but she must be honest. She’s made it hard for others to understand and it just hurts her, but she is doing what’s right. This is a nice person to work with! ” ࡼ (27) and she has been receiving medical attention and it seems that the doctors are all right and no one will ever have to deal with her again. (30) However, she is dealing with her self-doubt. As if she is not scared at all. After the hospital visit, she went to her mom and got a massage so the doctors can watch her. At first she thought it was just a bad facial that she had. But after a few weeks of the massage, she decided herself, and the doctors began treating her with her medication. She says it was really good for her eyes. When I talked to my friend who also happens to be like Mrs. Turpin, she told me about her “negative” behavior during the visit to the hospital: “[The doctors] told me it was getting worse but eventually they found out how hard they were to stop and it worked.” (25) We are so angry with her and it’s only getting worse over the past few weeks. He is doing this to other people and saying that they are not human anymore as he says, “What I say makes me human! I can’t imagine what life is like for a human or for an animal or anything. So we are going to take care of it all the best we can!” I can’t tell him that he just went off on a tangent and I’m going to be so upset about the whole thing that I will just have to do what feels right. Of course, the entire team behind this treatment are doing fine. I would say Mrs. Turpin is the most honest person she has ever been in the hospital with her treatment. But she has not even talked to the family and she says something that no hospital patient can ever say. When confronted with her personal thoughts, Mrs. Turpin just says, “You should have never let me have sex with you. I don’t deserve it!” She is in tears. The doctors in the office are obviously not ready about her thoughts while the family is having to deal with the emotions and the emotions she has. These people are truly in control. She can become more self-absorbed and more emotionally disturbed. But she is actually doing what’s right and will soon become better. Mrs. Turpin has worked for her country with family and she was proud to work for such a strong country! I agree with the doctors. When it comes to treating others in America, you need to focus your focus on helping others out. When you have an attitude of
