Lord of the Flies Essay
In America we have a government to create the kind of structure that makes this world sane. If we didnt have that structure we would become savages. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author shows that once the world has no structure we are lost and out of control. The world needs to have honest structure to stay in order.
When the boys first got on the island they were lost and then they all rallied up and figured out what the best thing is to do. Then Piggy was made fun of for his glasses. ” And Ive been wearing specs since I was three.”( Golding, 9) They all criticized him for his flaws. They really acted like nobody else on the island had flaws. And when they say something about his flaws he always has to explain himself.
Then, They end up using his specs for survival. ” His specs- use them as burning glasses.” (Golding, 40) “Piggy stood behind him, islanded in a sea of meaningless color, while Ralph knelt and focused the glossy spot. Instantly the fire alight, Piggy held out his hands and grabbed his glasses back.” ( Golding, 73) So after they made fun of his glasses and him they actually depended on him for getting the fire started for survival and to be rescued. That is so ironic because they put him down so much and then they need him in the end. That actually isnt fair to Piggy but he wants to help because he wants to be saved himself.
The conch (a shell that is significant) was the order of the island, at first. ” I tried to get over that hill to see if there was water all around. But your shell called us.” ( Golding, 14) They honored the conch. Once someone blew it they all listened. It was like an alert when it was blown.
Later in the book Ralph still believed in the conch. The group had the ups and downs and then Jack and Ralph werent agreeing with each other on some issues. So Jack split off into his own tribe. Then everyone started disrespecting the conch. ” Conch! Conch! shouted Jack, We dont need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter? Its time some people knew theyve got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to rest of us. ” (Golding, 139) Jack is very pessimistic about the conch and the order of things, well the correct order of things and so he takes matters into his own hands. He just doesnt like when there is something or someone telling him what to do.
So if we dont want to become savages we need to keep our structure. Mostly we need to have honest and strong and dependable structure. Because the president can act like he doesnt
