OBJECTIVE:
to verify the bending moment of a normal section of a loaded beam or cantilever is equal to the algebraic sum of the forces on one side of the section.
THEORY:
When a simply supported beam is under load, there is a bending moment at any section. This bending moment is the algebraic sum of the moments of forces on one side of the section. Let the anticlockwise moments to the right of be positive and clockwise moments negative.
PROCEDURE
om Arrange the supports and weight hangers at distance from section XX as shown in the “Result table”. Level the two halves of the beam by adjusting the spring balance and support nuts. Note the initial spring balance reading F1. add dead weight as shown in the Result table and re-level the beam to its original position. Record the new spring balance reading F2.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:
Complete the result table and draw the bending moment diagrams for Ia, IIa and IIIa. Compare the theoretical and experimental shear force at a section and describe very briefly how it might be verified.

A. Torsion machine consists the following parts: rigid base, headstock and chuck, straining head, straining head chuck, circular spring balance, spirit level, Torque arm leveling, hand wheel protractor scales (0*0.5 to 6 and 0*1 to 360) and revolution counters.
B. Torsiometer consists of the following parts: the dial gauge readings, two clamping jaws, one cylindrical spacer, knurled torsiometer clamping nut, and torsiometer actuator unit.
