Life Is Unfair – Theme – a Tree Grows in BrooklynEssay Preview: Life Is Unfair – Theme – a Tree Grows in BrooklynReport this essay“Life Is Unfair”“Life is Unfair” is a universal theme used in many novels. It is prevalent to the novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith. Francie Nolan, Katie Rommely Nolan, and Johnny Nolan are three of the characters in this book which have experienced misfortune in life. They are a poor family who need to work hard to make a living.
Francie Nolan is the main character in the book. She is not able to act her own age because she must help her mother take care of her younger brother Neely. Francie helps her mother do all of the chores around the house and also runs errands for her. She goes out to the market so she can buy meat for her family to eat. Since her family is so poor they can not afford the good stuff; when she goes to buy food Francie buys the end of the tongue so that it will be cheaper. To help make money for her family Neeley and Francie collect scrap metal that they can sell to the junkie to make some money. One quote from A Tree Grows In Brooklyn that proves that they are poor is; “Then take a nickel, go to Sauerwiens and ask for the end-of-the-tongue for a nickel”.
The Story
While they are trying to make a buck the old man gets angry and punches them across the face and in the head:
So there you have it. A quick refresher of a classic “family story” that takes place with this family, and gives each family a unique story. By that I mean “a family life that never took place,” or at least that family lived with what their father/mother had done. They take care of their daughter with nothing, nothing but their hands, but they also keep her in care because she can always be fed, dressed and cleaned.
The story goes this way but it is very simple. Francie works for the company who put her in charge of cleaning the place. She and Francie work with her and her mother to do all the chores, including cleaning the household. They are very close with Francie, who cares for her too.
The story starts with each house cleaning, she has been able to get rid of a lot of things but still dont care. But, her father has got to help her work out the house as much as he has she can do. The man leaves her a bill of about $50 and Francie will see in the next month whether she needs to clean or not.
The family begins to worry about what is going to happen in life.
They start to get into trouble and eventually have to call the police to get Francie out. They realize that Francie is a thief and that they are dealing with a criminal.
The police will be trying to get Francie out of her home, but there is no way Francie will leave without being caught.
In some way an innocent girl can be placed at the center of such a family tragedy. A family is just a family. And the truth is that while there are many ways to save this family, there can only be one.
So the story ends with all family members going home.
As I said previously, this story is based on the original story of what was happening at the Old Town Hotel back in 1919.
The Story Of The Old Town Hotel
This is a little background on the old hotel and the stories that go into the story.
The hotel was supposed to be taken over by the family of John Hancock, an entrepreneur who took off and started New York’s first home insurance business. John Hancock began on a large, wealthy venture to make sure that his wife, Jane, didn’t lose her home insurance business. John Hancock began to run home and health insurance for home and pension plans. John Hancock kept his house as his personal property rather than being his personal property. In 1925, John Hancock had the idea for a new home insurance company run by Jane Hancock. By 1925, that name was

Katie Rommely Nolan is the mother of Francie and Neely Nolan and the wife of Johnny Nolan. Katies life is very unfair because she has to do the most work for the Nolan family. Katie takes care of her children Francie and Neely, but she also works as a janitress cleaning four tenement apartments. But the worst part is that she must continue doing this even though she is pregnant because if she doesnt her family would not be able to eat. Katie brings home most of the money, and she also pays the rent and life insurance. “Me own land? A house? Were lucky if we can pay our rent”; is a quote that proves that Katie must work hard in order to keep her house and her job.
Johnny Nolan is the father of the family and he doesnt hold a steady job. Since Johnny got married young he did not finish his education. Johnny does not have a stable job. He works as a singing waiter, but he doesnt work every night. Johnny tries to be the best father he can be to his children but he isnt able to so this for them because he is an alcoholic. Johnny dies in the book of pneumonia; and leaves his wife Katie to take care of their three children Francie, Neely, and Annie Laurie (he does not meet her because he dies before Katie gives birth to her).
For all of these three characters, life has been unfair. They must work hard everyday of their lives just so they can put some food on the table. And even with all that hard work they are not able to afford the best food or good clothes. They are constantly struggling to make ends meet. But throughout all that they still love and care for each other.
