Maslow Pyramid
Abraham Maslow believed human motivation could be based on a pyramid he devised. I for one agree with Maslow. The pyramid is as followsTier 1: Biological and Physiological needs -Ex. air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep.Tier 2: Safety needs – Ex.  protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, freedom from fear.Tier 3: Love and belongingness needs Ex. friendship, intimacy, affection and love, – from work group, family, friends, romantic relationships.Tier 4: Esteem needs Ex. achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, self-respect, respect from others.Tier 5: Self-Actualization needs Ex. realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences.        In order for  a person to achieve success they must first learn to be a functioning member of society. As long as a person is not severely mentally or physically handicapped the person has potential to become successful and join the hierarchy of society. Unfortunately many people can not achieve tier 4 and thus cannot move on to tier 5. In our society it can be hard for many people to have high self esteem. Our society has become more infatuated with  physical appearances and acceptance of others over the past few years. Examples: Needing many likes on your facebook and instagram to feel accepted.         People who achieve greatness do not feel the need for minor technological acceptance. They move through the tiers with motivation to achieve greater accomplishments. Ex. A presidential candidate is more concerned with world problems (war, taxes, genocide, peace) than with mediocre “Likes” on facebook. Doctor’s , nurses and politicians can see past a need to merely be accepted. They flourish in their need to do something greater.
