Introduction to Microscale, Solubility, Crystallization
Introduction
The purpose of the “Introduction to Microscale” lab was to familiarize the experimenter with the equipment and show how to construct the apparatus needed to carry our further experiments by finding the density of Water and Hexane.
The purpose of the “Solubility” lab was to investigate the solubility of Benzophenone, Malonic Acid, and Biphenyl in Water, Methyl Alcohol, and Hexane.
The purpose of the “Crystallization” lab was to introduce the technique of crystallization by crystallizing Sulfanilamide in 95% Ethyl Alcohol.
Experimental
Steps for the “Introduction to Microscale” experiment can be found on page 10 of Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques¬ (4th Edition).
Steps for the “Solubility” experiment can be found on pages 14 and 15 of Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques¬ (4th Edition).
Steps for the “Crystillization” experiment can be found on pages 23 to 25 of Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques¬ (4th Edition).
Results
Introduction to Microscale
Water was found to have a density1 of .9962g/mL while Hexane was found to have a density2 of .6558g/mL. These results were compared to literature density values of Water and Hexane, .997g/mL and .660g/mL respectively. Both literature values according to the Organic Chemistry Portal website3.
Solubility
Benzophenone was found to be insoluble in water, soluble after 41seconds in Methanol, and partially soluble in Hexane.
Biphenyl was found to be insoluble in water, soluble after 60 seconds in Methanol, and soluble after 25 seconds in Hexane.
Malonic Acid was found to be insoluble in water, soluble after 7seconds in Methanol, and insoluble in Hexane.
Crystallization
Results of the experiment yielded a mass of .2227g, or 75.67% recovery4, of pure Sulfanilamide. Literature value for melting point of Sulfanilamide is found to be 165.5°C according to the Organic Chemistry Portal website3. Upon experimentation, a melting point range of 161-163°C was found.
Discussion
Introduction to Microscale
The results of the experiment show that the density for each substance was found to be within
