Gay Marriage
There are many Issues around the world these days, such as abortion, animal testing, and social issues. It seems that no one can come to a common agreement on these tough topics. Personal characteristics, such as upbringing, culture, religion and ethnicity, all play a role in determining ones feelings on these controversial issues. However, one of the most protested and discussed issues in current politics is same-sex marriage. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, only hard pressed arguments expressing opinions regarding the outcomes, benefits and possible harms that would come along with the endorsement of gay marriage.
Marriage is a ceremonial binding of two people into one. Historically marriage has been a man and a woman joining together by love to start a family. Today the historical view on marriage has changed drastically, with gay and lesbian couples demanding the right to marry and live equally like the heterosexual couples have. Marriage has been seen as a religious movement that brought together a man and a woman with the community’s interest.
But over time society has changed and today the belief is love is the only reason the get married. No longer is marriage a union which is based on the future and the good of the community. In today’s modern culture same sex couples are on the rise and this idea is being accepted by more and more people every day.
Currently in the United States same sex couples can get married in only nine states. As of march 2013, eleven countries (Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and Sweden) allow same sex couples to marry. Although same sex marriage is looked down upon by many religions, various religious communities are beginning to support and accept same sex marriages. No government should be able to legally prohibit someone from showing their love for another person.
If gay marriage is legalized many people will not be happy. This is because so many people feel that being homosexual is not natural, and is a sin against God. Religion does play a huge role in this controversy. Homosexuality is not accepted in many religions especially the top four religions in the world (Christianity, Hindu, Islam and Buddhism) all of these religions look down upon homosexuality and see it as unnatural. I believe religion is important but only to an extent, religion should not condemn or show hate
