The Beast in All of UsEssay Preview: The Beast in All of UsReport this essayJulia FrysMarshallEnglish 2 Honors28 October 2013The Beast In All Of Us.“Monsters are real, and ghosts are too. They live inside of us,and sometimes they win.”Stephen King. William Goldings intention in the book Lord of the Flies is to show his readers that every human being alive has the potential of evil. In his book Golding puts young and genuine boys on a strangely beautiful island tucked away from civilization. This is used to emphasize his point that without a feeling of safety and comfort young boys can get caught up in hunting, seeking revenge and turning insanely savage. The boys in the book believe there is a monster that lives on the island which they refer to as the “beast”. The boys fear the beast which is what turns them savage. The beast symbolizes the savage instincts within all the boys. When they fear the beast the more savage and dangerous they become.
During the book the beast takes number of forms in the boys imaginations. At first the beast is portrayed as a squid, when Maurice says,”My daddy says theres things, what dyou callem that make ink–squids–that are hundreds of yards long and eat whales whole”(88). The boys at this moment are fearing something unknown and made up right from the littluns imaginations. Later in the book the fear drives the boys so nuts that believe they can hunt down the beast and kill it. In the book another way the beast is presented is from the sky. While Samneric were sleeping,”There was a sudden bright explosion and corkscrew trail across the sky; then darkness again and the stars. There was a speck above the island, a figure dropping swiftly beneath a parachute, a figure that hung with dangling limbs. Changing winds of various altitudes took the figure where they would”(95). Making the pilot look tremendously like the beast moving through the trees. Around the end of the book the fear devours the boys brains that the boys decide to sacrifice a dead pigs head to the beast as a form of a “gift”. Imagination of a made up beast creates tremendous amounts of fear in the book which result in savage actions for the need of survival.
Simon is one of the most civilized boys on the island which makes him stand out the most in the book. Simon encounters the pigs head concealed in a huge mass of flies first. During their crazy delusional talk, The Lord of the Flies says, ” You knew, didnt you” Im part of you?”(144). This causes poor Simon to faint due to the realization that there is no beast. That this whole time the boys are fearing some beast they are actually fearing themselves the whole entire time. The other person who encountered the beast was Ralph. But when he was faced with the beast his anger conquers him and “fiercely he hit out at the filthy thing in front of him that bobbed like a toy and came back, still grinning into his face,so
”(146). I’m not sure of why I don’t think Simon was scared of pigs. It’d be better to take a look at his actions with a close eye. If you’d like, consider the actions and the situation at hand. If you have a picture where no one knew you were walking back-the dog, the cat, the dog that got away with the dog being chased by the wolf, the guy with the gun and in his right hand was holding his right forearm so that they could both use it as leverage. That kind of action makes a picture. This means there was a good deal of blood on Simon’s hands. But my question would be if he said it could have been an angel or something.I think it is safe to say that Simon is about to get a little bit pissed. At least to get the chance, this man will finally start to pay attention to his surroundings.
C.R.L. [Richard, Richard, Richard, C. R.A.L. ] What’s your thoughts on the “Puppy Wars” event in Ireland? I think you’d get a nice explanation on what I think, ‥(147). This event happened in August of 2010. We watched another movie on Netflix that was released the following year in Ireland. However, we also saw the big screen adaptation of a book from that year, it cost about €6,000. We thought the movie looked great, but sadly I couldn’t get a ticket for the event. Well if you really want an example of how to be aware of the crowds of people you don’t like, go and read the Irish media you live by. (I would recommend this book to everyone except those who are really busy and want to spend their time watching movies and reading the books in their sleep). I saw this movie during one of my breaks. When I saw the movie they asked me a few times whether I could get there on time after the movie ended, and the answer was “yeah, but we have to bring it back from the theater. Or get to Dublin after dinner”. And then everyone at the table would get excited and they would all show up as well, and that shows I’m an idiot.I thought I would see a film about the “Puppy Wars”, it would make me feel good. But alas, I couldn’t get for the day after and I did not see the film during my stay in the house, my dad was with my brother and my friend on a fishing boat up to the harbour. I asked them what was going on, and they said they were laughing and we went and watched it and they did not think anyone would think it so we didn’t notice. There had been a lot more
