I think Jonna will face many cultural barriers. She should study the German culture before she makes her trip. If at all possible she should try to practice some of the customs before she goes. If she learns a few phrases and words of the German language, this will show the people that she did make an effort to learn their language. I think this would show a sign of respect. The Germans do not expect Americans or anyone else to know everything about their way of life, but showing some knowledge would allow them to be more helpful.
As the text book states on page 102, “it is usually erroneous to assume that others act and think just as you do.” Just because people appear to be like us, does not make it so. Communication barriers will develop if we continue thinking this way. In order to communicate effectively with others, we must take the time to get to know a person and respect their beliefs, opinions, and way of life. We may not agree with other people and their beliefs, but that is what makes the world go around. It would be a boring place if we all agreed and seen eye to eye.
If I worked with someone who was continuously making racial slurs I would ask them to stop. I would explain that I, and possibly others are offended by the way they talk. If it continued I would then report the person. If the person was someone that I ran into on occasion, I would do my best to avoid them. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, some things need to be kept to ourselves. I am thankful that I do not have to deal with people like this. I am fortunate enough that I do not encounter this.
