Unchallenged Rule of Prussia and Austria over the German Empire
Many people did not tolerate the unchallenged rule of Prussia and Austria over the German empire, this can be seen by one pamphlet which was written by someone anonymous stated that the working class was the heart of the people and German empire (Document 11). Many others had views in direct contrast with nationalism, Metternich, an Austrian Chief Minister, went as far as to say that the idea of a unified Germany was evil, and needed to be stopped (document 3). These views were what caused the German empire to stay divided between 300+ different states with the major authorities of Prussia and Austria reaping its benefits. People of this time showed desperation for even basic needs, in document 9 a vivid drawing of a Prussian bread riot shows families and workers rioting over rations that the upper class did not need to worry about. This confusion of German unification and the major class divides saddened many of the people, in document 1, Ernst Arndt shows his views on how the fatherland of Germany is unknown, which expresses his want for a unification through his poetry.
