Did you know that a television star could also be the leader of a world power at the same time? Sounds like a difficult job huh? If you ask Hugo ChДЎvez he will just tell you its just another day on the job. Hugo ChДЎvez is the current president of Venezuela which not long ago was a dwindling and poverty stricken country in South America. Well a lot has changed since ChДЎvez took office in 1999. Dont get me wrong Venezuela is still located in South America but the whole poverty scene has been undergoing a massive face-lift. These changes have been viewed as both good and bad; lets see if we can look at the ChДЎvez figure in a different view, how about looking at his leadership strengths and leadership weaknesses. A few of the more prominent strengths are; nurturing, good communication, great personality, and an outstanding politician. Now a few of the less revered weaknesses would be; singled minded, nationalistic, unpredictable, and ego centric. For a better understanding lets go into detail and try to piece together the parts of this contemporary leader.
The first leadership strength that is seen by many of ChДЎvezs followers and supporters is his nurturing and caring nature. His popularity ratings soared after he gave out free health care and food from government subsidizing. (National Geographic vol. 209 No.4 p. 85) Even though some would say that he has had limited success in doing this, you still have to consider this as a leadership strength because most world power leaders didnt get to that point by stooping to the bottom of society and working there way up from there.
The next leadership attribute that ChДЎvez possesses is his outstanding communication abilities. The best way to understand the spell the president of Venezuela
Casts over his fellow citizens is to do as they do every Sunday morning at eleven and settle down in front of the television in a favorite chair, with a good provision of drinks and sandwich ingredients, for a broadcast of AlДÑ- Presidente, Hugo ChДЎvezs weekly television communion with his country. (Nat. Geo. Vol. 209 No. 4 p.88) His television show features him talking about current events and traveling all throughout Venezuela showing all the country has to offer. He is even usually followed by a culturally centered band so he can have some type of music back grounding the point he is trying to make.
The third leadership strength is that he is an outstanding politician. He has understood an essential lesson that lesser, or more cautious, politicians ignore at their risks. (Nat. Geo. Vol. 209 No. 4 p. 103) The attention that he devotes to the poor is seen through the admiration that the poor have towards him.
