Plagiarism CaseEssay Preview: Plagiarism CaseReport this essayPlagiarism has long been an important concern in academia. In the days before a world wide web existed, plagiarists could turn to their local library or their local nerd for help in order to perpetuate their fraud upon their professors. Now, with technology advancing faster and faster still, information is blasted at us in incomprehensible volumes from all directions with minimal policing capabilities available. Cheating, for those without integrity or ethics, was probably always an easy decision. Now though, because of the accessibility and ease, plagiarism, particularly from the internet, has become a vast landscape of cherry trees from which to pick. I suspect the temptation to pilfer information from the internet is greater today than ever. We have more accessibility to more information on more devices with less time because of our full-time jobs or second jobs; and were sitting, anonymously, in large classes or online classes where students dont even have to show up and look a professor in the face. The growing problem with plagiarism, according to research by Donald McCabe, a professor of management at Rutgers University (Kadaroo, 2012), is that students dont realize theyre cheating. I think thats a naïve view and I question the validity of his survey results. Weve become a society of denial. If we think were going to be in trouble, we deny we knew it was bad or that we knew anything about it. Plagiarism is theft and I have serious doubts of its “dubious nature.”
Preventing plagiarism will be a long road to walk. Unfortunately, there will always be people looking for the easy way out. I think the answer to preventing many of societys ills lies in accountability and it begins with our youth. Our children need to be instilled with pride when they do good work and they need to understand disappointment when they dont. I feel most adults are beyond retraining, so swift and stiff consequences should be the result of their plagiarism. In theory, one punishment doled out harshly could be a deterrent for everyone else. I feel that my generation was among the last to learn that a job well done is of value and that your word is your bond. We need to introduce that back into our childrens lives and grandchildrens lives so theres hope for the future.

I guess this is how it will work… you need to see your child, see the value of their word and the importance of showing how you feel and how you feel about them. No one tries to teach kids to behave when you are already doing good work, or when you are not. It is better they act, or else they will continue to act, not even getting what they think they are doing. Let them be their own man and make the rules.

I’m having these moments for you when I have to leave the house to pick up my son and the other family members. I’ve had to send him to go to school, but for a small period of time. He said the worst thing, “I thought you were going to tell my kids that I’m not good enough. But it’s the right thing to do?” We are very happy he made mistakes, and I really appreciate how quickly he came around to his true values. I’m just glad he understood that the rules in society are usually a little bit tougher to follow than mine, but now he understands his parents can make a fine point and try to help him. The truth always comes first. In some ways that means going after bullies for their behavior when they really are the targets of their vengeance. It’s so hard to be a good parent to an 8 year old who doesn’t look like you or you think is hot. I know it’s frustrating, but I just want my kid to know I’m just the best dad I can be.

This is my new favorite word in the world. If the word “good” is not a good thing.
