Stereotypes come in all shapes in sizes. Must people think of prejudice as whites against blacks but this is not true. Gordon Allport a Harvard psychologist said that prejudice is determined by the way one thinks of someone off of what they see them as. For instants if we where to see a man dressed in a three-piece suit most people would assume that he was wealthy and had money. Today there are all types of prejudice around the world.
One type of stereotype we see today is hatred towards color. Back in the day whites and blacks where the topic of prejudice that we mainly saw but toward its changed. For example after 911 incident people started having stereotypes for dark skinned people saying how they all are terrorists and that they should go back to there on country. All this is formed due to something that happen that many people feel affected them badly even if it was just one occasion.
Another stereotype seen today is obesity. Today culture in America especially many people act like being over weight is wrong. I have witnessed this personally seeing people be made fun of because of the weight or size. Stereotype and prejudice has gotten out of had in todays society and I would have to agree with Gordon in which I believe that it starts from ones analyzes of first impression.
Ways to help reduce prejudice today I would have to say that there really isnt a way to. Unless maybe if one is brought up to not judge others on what they have heard of seen and to give everyone a fair shot then that might help to prevent it. Another way might be if they would show things on television or programs in schools to inform the youth what stereotyping is and what prejudices is that also might help to lessen the likely hood of it.
