Youve heard of sprains and strains, but do you really know what they are? Many times they happen during sports, and activities. They happen all the time, yet we never really think about what they are. Here, we will discuss the difference between sprains and strains, how they are graded and the kinds of treatment available.
Lets start with sprains. A sprain is an acute injury to a ligament. More easily said, a sprain is when a ligament around a joint is stretched or torn. This causes pain and swelling. A sprain happens when a joint is put in an unnatural position. Sprains are graded according to the severity of the sprain. In grade one sprains few ligament fibers are stretched or damaged. In grade two sprains there is a moderate tear and more fibers are damaged. In grade three, which is the worst sprain, there is a complete rupture of the ligament.
Now, move on with strains. A strain is very much like a sprain only a strain involves muscles. A strain, also called a pulled muscle, happens when a muscle is overstretched or torn. This can happen when a muscles is forced into an unnatural stretch. The grading system for strains is very similar to the grading of sprains. A grade one strain has a few muscle fibers stretched. Grade two has a muscle moderately torn and more fibers damaged. Grade three, just like a sprain, is the worst strain and has the muscle completely torn.
