F.Scott Fitzgeraldās “the Great Gatsby” Comparison and Contrasted with Jane Austens Pride and PrejudiceJoin now to read essay F.Scott Fitzgeraldās “the Great Gatsby” Comparison and Contrasted with Jane Austens Pride and PrejudiceThe reading of other texts contributes to creating meaning for other texts. An example of this is Jane Austenās Pride and Prejudice, this novel is more easily understood when it is compared and contrasted to other literature works, such as F. Scott Fitzgeraldās The Great Gatsby. The aspects of the two novels that can be compared and contrasted are the plot development, characterisation, setting, narrative point of view, writerās context and themes and issues.
The plot of Pride and Prejudice is about a lower upper class woman in the 18th century who is trying to get all of her daughters married to wealthy men. Jane, Mrs Bennetās oldest daughter falls in love with the handsome and wealthy Bingley. But Bingleyās sister and best friend Darcy try to pull them apart. Darcy is a very proud and arrogant character, who Elizabeth hates because of his involvement in her sisters heartbreak. Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth and she then ends up falling in love Darcy, which results in them both getting married as well as Jane and Bingley.
The plot of The Great Gatsby is about a young man, Nick Carraway who moves to New York where the occupants are obsessed with wealth and status in the Jazz age of the 1920ās. Nick meets Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man who is trying to win back his love Daisy. She is now unfortunately married to wealthy and arrogant Tom Buchanan. Gatsby reunites with Daisy but shortly after he is murdered by Tomās mistressās husband, who mistakes him as his late wifeās killer. After Gatsby is killed Tom and Daisy flee, and Nick is left to pick up all of the pieces.
The similarities between the plot developments of the two novels are that the protagonists are both looking for love, in a society that is ruled by wealth and status. The differences are that The Great Gatsby has a bittersweet ending and in Pride and Prejudice all of the conflicts are resolved and everyone ends up been happy. This is because Pride and Prejudice is a satirical piece of work and The Great Gatsby is more a dramatic novel .In The Great Gatsby the reader is able to learn how emotions can disillusion people and this idea of understanding also flows in Pride and Prejudice and is one of the main conflicts in the plot. The characters also contribute to the plot through their characterisation.
In Pride and Prejudice the dramatic method of characterisation is used. Austen has used the āshow me donāt tell meā approach to her work. Characters are revealed through their dialogue, actions and responses. For Example Darcyās character is revealed through comments that other people make āHe is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high and so conceited, that there was no enduring himā¦I quite detest the manā. Only the main characters such as Darcy and Elizabeth are complex and are able to develop and change their own opinions and views. All of the other characters do not develop or change throughout the novel and they are stereotyped to fit the roles that they are given. In comparison the characters in The Great Gatsby are also simple flat characters. The only complex character is Nick who is able to make his own judgement about morals and voice his own opinions. For example this is how nick describes Tom when he first meets him ātwo shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.ā The contrast between the protagonistās and lesser characters emphasises the themes and issues that both writers are trying to portray. By understanding how F. Scott Fitzgerald uses this unique contrasting, the reader is able to readily identify how Jane Austen used the same device. F. Scott Fitzgerald makes use of the discursive method of characterisation in The Great Gatsby, which contrasts Austenās method of characterization. Nick describes the characters and he makes many comments about their personalities and actions. The setting that the characters live in also reveals and develops them further.
Pride and Prejudice is set in the late 18th century during the Napoleonic wars (1797-1815). The times affect how the characters act and how they respond to certain situations because of the traditions and manners that were expected from them. The novel is set in rural England in an upper class society. The setting only shows how the upper class people live and never looks at any of the other aspects of that time. In contrast The Great Gatsby is very symbolic with its settings. The novel is set in the Jazz age of the 1920ās in New York. Each of the classes within New York, live in a distinct setting to symbolise their status within society. For example Tom and Daisy live in East Egg which symbolises traditional inherited wealth. Their house is described to be a very elaborate āGeorgian Colonial Mansionā with a very expensive āsunken Italian garden,
The theme of this novel is about how our society in the 19th century got the idea to make social life more palatable.
Ā The theme of this novel is about how our society got the idea to make social life more palatable. Ā The way they do this is by setting off a cycle of revenge or violence that we see as social conflict. This cycle is illustrated in The Hunger Games novel ā¤. The narrative follows the same concept as The Great Gatsby. They become less, not more powerful. However, they are still there for their families and even in the lives they live, but they are still there to fight and to keep the people safe. The Hunger Games: The Hunger Games, which is set in the 1970s, is based on the idea of revenge.
The book’s plot starts with two families. One from their house in New York, the other from the Hamptons, where they had a very small house. The family of the deceased had to give in their quest and so, when they were killed, they began a vicious revenge-driven life as far as their families were concerned. The two families were only forced to live it out, as their family members continued to be killed. In New Bedford, a year later the Hamptons were attacked by the American Empire in the Civil War and the Hamptons became a colony. Because the Americans made large swaths of territory, they couldn’t afford to give up their own farms. This destroyed the lives of the families as food for their children in their families. At any rate while this was happening their children died, and even when the Hamptons were able to give in to all of their demands, they did not give up their homes. When the Americans were finished, the family took up fishing. This was the end of their life of their own making.
The Hamptons, who owned the fishing-related land, had to pay for the entire fishing-related land. This was to cover up the damage of war. After five years, it was determined that the Hamptons would be required to pay the Americans for their use of their lands, but this money would be used to build a large plantation in the middle of the country, and the colonists would come and continue fishing. It was also hoped that this would allow the Americans to give back their land, for it would increase their strength and influence with the world. To make it all work out the colonists had to hire thousands of slaves of the colonies owned by the Americans and they ended up with nearly 5,000 soldiers and 8,000 soldiers and the colonists did not want to have to pay taxes and pay a fair amount of taxes. As they all were still on land, this freed up food for the workers. This also allowed the Americans to pay a fair percentage of the land price to the colonists, which was given to them as a gift from the Americans. As time went on, they would give back this land and their land value were eventually made equal to the amount of taxes the slaves would pay as they got them money.
However, there are a few other instances where a colony is destroyed and all of its inhabitants go missing, as some other colonists died in the battles and others were captured and taken
