AMERICAN DREAM ESSAY The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a story that talks about the American dream. Mr. Gatsby’s life is the main depiction of what the American dreams looks like, taste like, and feels like. Even though “The Great Gatsby” talks about the American dream directly, it is similar to the song the “A Team” by ED SHEERAN, because it also talks about the American dream, but in a negative way which is common to most people. “Lights gone, days end struggling to pay rent long nights, strange men” this line of the song “A Team” talks about how the sunsets makes the day go dark, because a young lady’s power as been cut off, still this young lady is struggling to pay her house rent. In other to keep it, she has to go with strange men. Compare to this quote “it was Gatsby’s mansion, or, rather, as I didn’t know Mr. Gatsby, it was a mansion inhabited by a gentleman of that name”……….. “The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches from the sun” this quote from “The Great Gatsby” shows the luxurious life Mr. Gatsby is living; the sunset doesn’t disturb the lights from his mansion to shine even better. The young lady’s life is more complex compare to Mr. Gatsby’s life that has everything under his reach.
“Loose change, bank notes, Weary-eyed, dry throat, Call girl, no phone” this line from the song “A Team” talks about how the young girl has less to no change with her, she is has nothing to drink, she has no phone to call her friends. Compare to this quote “every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York …….. There was a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour”. This quote from “The Great Gatsby” shows how juice is being made in the kitchen. The oranges and lemon being delivered to him every Friday is the main source of the juice. The young lady is thirsty just for a little drink, while Mr. Gatsby has more juice than he could drink. “Ripped gloves, rain coat, tried to swim and stay afloat, Dry house, wet clothes” this line from the song “A Team” talks about how the young lady’s house is dry meaning nothing like foods or drinks, while her clothes are wet due to the rain and probably have no other clothe to wear. . Compare to this quote “he took out a pile of shirt and began throwing them one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel”. This shows how Mr. Gatsby is a man of many clothes, who probably won’t wear everything. Compare to the young lady with wet clothes, Mr. Gatsby has a lot of clothes that he can’t even wear. “And they scream the worst things in life come free to us” this line from the song the “A Team” talks about how poverty and pain comes free to people who don’t want it. Compare to this quote “and it was from Cody that he inherited money-a legacy of twenty five dollars”. This shows how Mr. Gatsby inherited wealth free from someone who died. Compare to people who get poverty and pain freely, Mr. Gatsby life is somewhat a free blessing. “Closed eyed, And hoping for a better life” this line from the song “A Team” talks about how the young lady hopes for a better life which contains happiness and love. Similar to this quote “I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock”. This quote talks about the green light which symbolizes hope for Gatsby that one day he would reunite with daisy. Both the “A Team” and “The Great Gatsby” both share hope for a better life in common. The young lady hopes for a better containing love and Mr. Gatsby hope for a better life with daisy.
