There is no question that the penny has carried great importance since its creation in 1909. Some people see it only as money. There are also some people however that see it as more of a burden. That it wastes too much time finding the right amount of pennies. But in reality it has always been of great importance not only for monetary reasons but also for historical reasons.
Some people have wanted to get rid of the penny because they see it as worthless. However the people that want to get rid of the penny are greatly outnumbered as it showed in source E 59% of people wanted to keep the penny while only 29% wanted to get rid of it. This shows that the people of the united states do not want to abolish the penny. In source c however Safire said that “Nearly 2/3 of pennies disappear out of circulation.” Once again he was proved wrong in source d by Weller when Weller said “Only around 5.6 percent disappear.” With these two statements it is quite obvious that the claims that the majority of people want to get rid of the penny are actually lies.
