Invictus Movie Report
Chloe Chu V00850790Movie Report— Invictus   There is no doubt that the former South Africa president Nelson Mandela is a great leader in the past decades. He demonstrated his talent leadership competencies throughout the movie “Invictus”. “Invictus” is a sports drama film based on South Africa 1995 Rugby World Cup and the story behind. In this movie, Mandela’s strong communication and teambuilding skill left a deep impression in my mind. He knew how to inspire people around him. When he met with the captain of the Springboks rugby team, Francois, he used the story of his own sufferings in prison and a British poem, “invictus”, to encourage the frustrated Francois and make him willing to stand up and fight for the country. He was also a considerate and approachable team leader who always gives compliment and concern to his followers. For example, he asked, “How was your ankle?” to Francois when they first met. Moreover he remembered every team member’s name of the Springboks rugby team. Mandela was known as a generous leader by trusting and forgiving the white officers who used to have prejudice against him. As a brilliant leader, Mandela also had excellent strategic visioning. He believed firmly that a successful sport event would be a great chance to unite a nation torn apart by nearly 50 years of racial tensions and remove the obstacles between black and white people. So he decided to support the Springboks rugby team to the 1995 World Cup. Mandela was good at taking charge as a leader. He was accountable and willing to take risk for the country. In the movie, he said, “The day I am afraid of risk is the day I am afraid to lead.” He always takes responsibility for operations and results. He insisted to go the meeting and persuade the black people about racial tensions himself regardless the dangerous. And when he was interviewed in the TV show, he said, “ If I don’t change it myself, how can I expect others?” A successful leader must be able to demonstrate his personal values too. He was hard working and stayed up late for work until he was ill. He also showed his integrity by creating a climate of trust and fair. He believed racial equality and treated everyone in the country equally. Only by having such a great leader, Nelson Mandela, South Africa becomes a liberal and equal country without discrimination nowadays.
