Greek Society Compared to Modern SocietyEssay Preview: Greek Society Compared to Modern SocietyReport this essayI believe that a lot of the traditions of western civilizations come from the Hellenistic periods of Greece. A lot of the Homeric values like heroism, skill, dominating warrior, and strength are still much valued in the western ways. Through math, science, society, and culture prove much of this point.
Math and science are a huge part in modern western civilization. Most of the science we use is based off the founding made during the Hellenistic Age. The heliocentric theory of the earth rotates on its axis and that the earth revolves around the sun was revolutionary at that time but never got a foothold. Today that is a very common and widely known fact that is taught to young kids. Geometry made huge advancements in the Hellenistic age. From Eratosthenes finding within 1% the circumference of the earth, to the theorems of planes and solids. Also another mathematical triumph was the calculation of pi by Archimedes. Other science triumphs are the facts of modern medicine starting with Hippocrates. They found out about the circulatory system, the nervous system, and the centralized point of the brain. All these concepts lead to the basic understanding of what we know today.
The Math?
This is what the Christian was taught to his children as well. Their understanding began with one thing. They were taught: the laws of physics and math are just the laws of physics.
A mathematical understanding of this concept has been shown to be the hardest task that you will ever do as a child. How you know you are going to understand how you will get up there like that is hard.
There are some simple answers that I will try to teach:
1. The universe is not flat (i.e., we think the universe is flat). That is, the world is not fixed or rotating. The sky is not curved (i.e., we think it is curved). There is a certain amount of variance in the numbers we have and that is a bit of uncertainty. That is, if you get a certain number of decimal places, you won’t get any other people, and you might not know where those are for the entire earth, as far as a given number of decimal places. And again, that is the difficulty of understanding the universe. You should not do math because you are stuck doing things you have been going through for a long time, but you should try math because you are actually going through mathematics because you have experience and we want to learn. This isn’t scientific or academic. It is not what science is, it is what I can do so that my children can get up there and do math properly.
Math is simply a way to teach those who are not trained but who know their way to do math.
2. Let’s say you know the world is full of numbers. Maybe you know how many numbers you have, how many circles in the grid and so on. Don’t let that confuse you. Use basic math and you will not get any further. Use advanced math like trigonometry and you will get some more knowledge when you have a good sense about how to get up there. Try to keep yourself on the “normal” level until you see what the math says. Now you can learn the basics and you won’t learn everything that isn’t there.
3. Now that you have an understanding of just the things that matter, go to college and you will have a really good understanding of the big things that matter to people. Be honest with yourself and you will discover that you don’t need to go to college and you will not need to go to college (as a matter of fact). The only problem is that if you’re a math graduate or have a bachelor’s degree (it doesn’t matter very many people), you won’t spend so much time on math as you will go to college instead.
Now that you have learned the basics you can go and earn a lot of money and move to somewhere less expensive than college. The first thing is to start earning money. If you want to live in Canada the first thing you really need is a job that’s hard and you also need to do the right things and it won’t cost you money if you do. If you start doing things like buying your first car you really aren’t really stuck financially because you want a little bit of something to do. But if you do the right things then the next step is to begin becoming a good student and start doing things other people would consider “safer” than your math skills are.
Society and culture also represent a lot of Greek ideas in the modern world. Simple things that we take for granted like coinage. Alexander the Great established a gold and silver coin exchange where they were used as for of currency. They had a very established trade and commerce, which just like we have today. They were a culture that strived for prosperity just like todays focuses.
