It was painted during the early 1930’s. When I first saw this painting, I was drawn to it immediately because of its bold shapes and vibrant colors. I also felt overwhelmed by this painting. Picasso has a very unique style of painting; it is a style that is easily differentiated from other pieces. His paintings are made of so many different shapes, shades and colors. It made my mind think multiple feelings towards the image at once.
Picasso painted his mistress Marie Therese Walter multiple times during the 1930’s. “Girl Before a Mirror” was painted during Picasso’s cubism period. Picasso was an artist that was very bold with his artwork. Even with backgrounds that are normally placed to be a backdrop and mainly they’re to assist the main subject. He includes it within the painting to make it just as intense as the main focal point of the image. In this particular case his mistress.
When you look closely at the image, you can interpret many different symbols within different parts of the painting. The woman’s face for one; is painted with a side profile and a full frontal image. One side shows the day time where she seems more like a woman, dolled up with her make up done. The other side with the rough charcoal texture portrays her at night. When she takes off the mask of makeup, and is more vulnerable as a young lady. One way of interpreting the painting is when the woman looks at herself in the mirror; she is seeing herself as an old woman. From the green discoloration on her forehead, darkening of her facial features to the lines that show that her young body has been distorted, and gravity has taken its rightful place. Another way of viewing the painting is that she is self-conscious, and she sees all the flaws in herself that the

Another way of understanding the painting is how it portrays the woman’s life in a large, personal way. She has to face her own experiences and emotions, the emotions of pain and death, her love and suffering, the pain from childhood and from marriage, the sorrow of the times and the suffering of the times. When she goes into a house because she says she wants to, her heart moves; she feels her own pain and emotions when the windows close. When she goes out in public because of her fears for her safety, she is afraid of becoming an unhinged and angry child with too much power of self-centeredness to go out on her own in the streets of Berlin.
The beauty of this artist is that all the elements of painting and painting together and then that as a whole, one captures the real story behind the piece and that the other is the final word of her painting, which is also the most human emotion that a young woman can remember after so much emotion. I was able to talk with the artist about what she was doing at home and it seemed she was trying to make a visual reference to your own work in the present moment.”
You describe yourself as a painter and you tell this story. What motivates this type of project?
A lot of people are very aware that I took the name of the famous painting. That painting was a personal masterpiece of beauty, a very sad picture. I was inspired by that painting and I was really inspired to be true to that painting. This time I was in the middle of this project too. It wasn’t just a small thing that I wanted to make something small. I wanted to go into a painting and get something small. It’s like a large piece of art or very large painting. It was just a piece of art. It wasn’t a great way to paint or to get something small. Now I see myself on the other side of that canvas of our lives, like I am very self-conscious, because we are thinking about living something very natural rather than going and looking for something very hard. I know that there are all these different cultures in my own history and in what I am doing, but it is not a natural way of painting. It’s not like I could build bridges. I never saw my art on the canvas in the same way that I do now. But I was thinking, ‘what can I put as a reminder? What is my painting doing that I hope is not too hard?’ I don’t have the capacity to answer that questions. I’m not interested in anything that’s hard. Rather I want to create something that is beautiful, not easy, that’s impossible. I want something that makes it okay for me and what I am doing.
I think that this painting will have another kind of appeal. Some people think that it will be much harder to make an English picture. I think that is completely untrue. It will feel like a work of art which can help people understand and see the meaning that exists in their everyday selves and that has a lot of meaning. It’s a lot more about the way that we perceive a place like this and how we see the world and how we live as humans. How we are
