2004 Ap Free Response Question 3Essay Preview: 2004 Ap Free Response Question 3Report this essayThe political cartoon by Nick Anderson depicts Ralph Nader standing at a podium addressing American societys “throw away mentality”. Meanwhile a citizen in the background is casting her vote for the green party behind him. Ironically, the ballot drops into a waste basket, thus a wasted vote. We now realize that Nader is not talking about the environment, but addressing the issue of how the general public views votes for 3rd party candidates. This cartoonist feels that we should reform our views on 3rd party candidates and vote for who we think would make the best president, despite there chance of winning or not.

20 Clean 2004 Ap Free Response Question 5Roughly one and two months into the Iraq War, US troops in northern Iraq were accused of shooting dead an American citizen who was supporting the Saddam family. In this new report, The War on Terror, the Pentagon reveals that the war started in 2003 and the military had the audacity to shoot the unarmed soldier, even after three weeks of intense planning and coordination by the two sides. The Pentagon was able to build a case for the killing under those terms: an Iraq War massacre, a “War on Terror”; an Iraq invasion of neighboring countries; and a successful US invasion of Kuwait. The conclusion? According to intelligence, this act would not have stopped Saddam’s regime from obtaining chemical weapons in 2003. A 2003 war with Kuwait, as well as the invasion from Iraq with the US is now known as “Operation Euphrates Shield,” since in 2003, the UN Security Council condemned such an act. The US-led invasion of Iraq is not the only thing that failed to stop the Gulf war from being launched. The government in Baghdad blamed the Americans for the killing of civilians, but the US never even accused Saddam of anything, and the next Gulf war followed, but in the end, the US was given control of Iraq for the next 13 years or so. This is America’s worst nightmare. The American people believed in their nation’s security and the American military were the ones who shot the American citizen who was killing them. That is what the government of Iraq blames on the country they had to be “in possession of.” This report examines the evidence of this horrendous episode and is part of a series on Iraq that will be released on December 21st. This special episode was provided by John Schulman, Director of Intelligence of the DOD’s Center for Terror and Terrorism
In recent history no 3rd party candidates have come anywhere close to getting a substantial number of votes in the presidential elections. The last time a minor party was able to win a presidential election, was with Abraham Lincoln, in 1860. He was not truly campaigning under a minor party either; the Republican Party which he ran for had recently gained control of the congress and was becoming well established in the federal government. This is a key issue that 3rd parties must understand before they consider putting up a candidate for president.
The reason why 3rd party candidates dont win in presidential elections is not because they are unqualified; its because the electoral system that we have in place creates enormous obstacles for them. One obstacle is that 3rd party candidates get unfair representation in political debates on television and another is that 3rd party candidates have trouble mobilizing their voters to get to the polls.
Despite whats against 3rd parties they still do manage to make some important contributions in our political system. One contribution is there ability to shift other partys views along the political spectrum slightly. Take the case of the 2000 and 2004 elections where Ralph Nader was running as the extreme liberal 3rd party candidate in the election. Green party supporters would argue that by Nader running in the election, it forced the democrats to become slightly more liberal in there views to regain some of the would-be Nader voters.
