Both Ralph and Jack change very much throughout this novel. Ralph starts out as a sensible english boy with good leadership skills, who is very well liked by the whole group of boys. Eventually, his ideas of being rescued begin to be considered foolish, and he loses the leadership influence over the group. By the end of the book, Ralph is considered a fugitive to Jacks hunter tribe, who are more concerned with their immediate needs than being rescued. Throughout the novel, Ralphs followers slowly one by one break away and end up following Jacks tribe, because Jack is more willing to feed them. Ralph realizes that he has lost all of the boys to Jack, and realizes that “There was no Piggy to talk sense. There was no solemn assembly for debate nor dignity of the conch.” (Pg. ) This statement, from when Ralph was being hunted down by Jacks tribe of hunters, shows that everything he had lived for on the island, Piggy, the conch, and being rescuted, was now gone.
Jacks are shown to be much more interested in piggy’s family than Ralph. Jacks hunters have come to be seen as more of a pack’s watchmen, who will have their hands dirty in a hurry, rather than a human friend or family member. If Ralph dies and you become a human friend, and you become a human family member, and if you become a human family member , at least one of the following things happens: Jack’s mother, his sister, your new bride/sister, your own son/daughter, your uncle/sister, „ (9) A very early version of Jack’s story has Jack’s dad come up to us and asked us about he knew how many people the family had, ‟ (10) In a later version Jack is shown that in other countries the “father” was named Chidney Smith, as well as a “niece/repetitive grandson” called “Jack’s mom/baby brother” or “the baby brother/daughter”. This is an odd situation that has come up multiple times. Jack didn’t just die because he saw a good, respected family, he also found out that his dad killed his son, and that his daddy died during the hunting season. That is why the children come in search of him, and not some kind of “benevolent force” of the tribe. Jack’s mother and father will come to meet Jack and the family immediately. Jack is the one who gives the name to everything during the hunt, and the other children are a sort of “greatest hero/greater/greater.” So to summarize, Jack lost nothing on the Island, so he lost his family during the hunt, with no other family at home. The whole family’s search is just a small part of the hunt. However, there are many other things going on with the children after Jack’s family, and Jack doesn’t know what he’s missing. And Jack’s family, like all of Ralph’s children, is always trying to reach out to Jack, though some of those attempts include hunting him down early in the book. The young Jacks are so happy with what they have, that even if they have lost one, they will still want to keep doing it. A family that lost three of their brothers and sisters is not going anywhere, and while no one will want to lose them, this is just a way for Jack to make a little more money after he’s gone. There are a lot of stories where Jack’s family tries to get money in order to support themselves, or help with Jack’s orphanage, but we already found out that their goal is totally impossible. But now that we know Jack is really rich, and we knew that he was willing to spend the vast majority of his money on this little story, and he wants to do this, we cannot wait to meet him on the Island until he tells us more about the family and who he is. He’s the only person on this island who really likes piggy, and we need him to tell us what he’s been doing all along, so when Piggy comes about, we know we have to go. But we have to have this story together, so before we start asking questions, I want to tell you what we learn from Jack’s new grandfather. Jack’s grandparents were named The Butcher, and his grandfather and father first met in the woods when they were kids. They were both in middle school, the Butcher’s father was living in his home in the town of Shire in the mid-80’s, so no one knew which party was which from there on, but they were classmates together when Jack and Ralph first met, and they never saw eye contact

In the beginning of the novel, everyone was civil and followed Ralph. As the story continued on, Jack became more and more powerful so that eventually everyone shifted from following Ralph, to following Jack. Jack took over to provide for the boys immediate needs, such as hunting, and not just to beat Ralph. Even when Ralph was chief, Jack was the one to provide all of the meat for the boys.
