Ropes to Know 1
Introduction:
This is a short story about a company picnic. At this picnic all employee roles are irrelevant and comradery is encouraged. The goal of the picnic is for employees to freely have fun and meet new people within the company. Stanley, one of the employees, had a little bit too much to drink and was chatting up and playing horseshoe with a gentlemen. He boasted about working at the headquarters in New York and made a few comments that made the gentleman pause and take a closer look at his name tag. He was basically doing the drunk thing where you gain lots of confidence and arrogance. After the game of horseshoe, someone told him that he was talk to Mr. Marsh. Stanley then feels embarrassed and regretful of the things he said during their encounter. Stanley is also reminded that he is but a needle in a haystack of Stanley’s.
Lesson to be learned:
The lesson here is to think before you speak, especially to someone you do not know. In Stanley’s case, he did not make any effort to find out who he was playing horseshoe with or bother to remember his name. In addition to that, he drank quite a bit. At company events, such as this, it is always good to know your limits and be respectful. Even though the picnic encourages everyone to drop employee roles and have fun, it is best to not let your guard down. You never know who you could be talking to and the consequences your words have even in the ‘picnic’. If rubbed the wrong way, people do remember and there may be repercussions.
Person Experiences:
I used to work for an electronic medical records company. It was a small company, but I was new so I did not know everyone just yet. As I was chatting and joking with my trainer, an older gentleman walks through and asks what we’re up to. Me, not wanting to stop our conversation, kind of just ignored him
