PERSONAL PERCEPTION OF ADVANCE PRACTICE ROLE
Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice Registered Nurse, that uses his/her keen
assessment skill, and holistic view of the patient to Bridge the Gap in health care delivery.
According to the California State Board of Nursing a Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse
Who possess additional preparation and skills in physical diagnosis, psychosocial, and
management of health-illness needs in primary health care, and who has been prepared in a
program conforming to board standards as specified in California State Board of Nursing Nurse
Practitioner Act (NPA) section 1484. The role of the Nurse Practitioner is to provide Primary
care including medical procedures that may be required for a specialty area, while working in
collaboration with physicians. These include using clinical competency when treating medical
Conditions, utilizing approved standardized procedures to provide comprehensive care
management, and prescribe medications.
Given the above definitions, to be a Nurse Practitioner would mean the ability to use my
skills as a registered nurse to effectively affect not only the delivery of health care, but the way it
is carried out. That is providing quality primary healthcare to the disadvantaged in the society
who do not have health insurance, and as such do not have access to primary care physicians.
These include people in the inner cities and some rural areas that rely on emergency rooms for
their health care.
The Family Nurse Practitioner education, would mean to have the advance training, and
autonomy needed to enhance my knowledge base as a registered nurse to support the health of
the community,
