This is not the first time that I work for Helen of Troy. I worked here about two years ago at the warehouse for a hole year, and for the purpose of this week’s chapter, I think there is no better example, let me explain why: When you are working on a office environment, you have a formal dress code, and you are supposed to be in touch with management, is weird to see people horse playing around; this could not be more different on a warehouse environment. People get to know each other very well in less time because they physically work together and they have to form teams to complete their tasks. They tend to be ruder to each other because of that over confidence they create on each others, and the dress code gives a more casual way of behavior, even though they have one, they tend to feel more comfortable doing thinks that you would not do on a formal attire; this is the main reason why we need a very well structured progressive discipline program aligned with the company’s goals and values.
Now, in order to do that, we need to first take a look at the goals and values of Helen of Troy. Helen of Troy is a home town company that grew immensely throughout the years with the strategy of buying high level brand names in personal care, and then they expanded to kitchenware, automotive, house tools etc. Their profile has been one of a high end technology company, with unbeatable customer service and well trained employees. Helen of Troy is also known as one of the companies that offers the best benefits to their employees in El Paso, with great health care plans, cook outs, health fares and a huge Christmas party. Being said that, we know that the values of the company are very strong, they value as much at their external customer as the internal one. They believe that honesty and respect comes first and takes very seriously any health threats in any form they might come, being this a simple cold or a broken bone.
Progressive Discipline Policy for the Warehouse of Helen of Troy
Purpose.- Helen of Troy strongly believes that every employee want to, and will do a good job if they know what is required to perform their job properly. We as a company are dedicated to provide them with highly trained supervisors that will take the challenge of ensuring what is expected from them every employee to do in their jobs. We need to create a safe working environment for all of our employees so they can perform their jobs at a 100% in a harmonious way, and improve their performance according with the quality standards already established for each department in the warehouse, and this can only be done by developing a series of rules that are necessary to make this happen. The employees will be trained in each of these rules and kept informed about any changes or corrections by their direct supervisors.
Policy.- In the case that an employee incurs on any of the penalties listed below*, Helen of Troy will take the following corrective actions:
Penalties for group 1:
First offense: Oral reprimand
Second offense: Written Reprimand and suspension
Third offense: Termination
Penalties for group 2:
First offense: Suspension or termination
Second offense: Termination.
*Group 1: Offenses include:
Checking in/out for another employee.
