Scarlet LetterScarlet Letter“Lying is done with words, also with silence,” famous quote by Adrienne Rich. Most people that sin are unknown, but others are known of because of public punishment. Back in the Puritan time the act of the scarlet letter was a wide known punishment. In the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthore, the scarlet letter is used as a punishment to Hester Prynne for adultery. Though the letter was for one person’s punishment it affected others. Anyone involved with a sinner’s sin will feel pain, isolation, aguish, or human discomfort in their life.
Hester Prynne, the sinner of the novel has the worse life while wearing the symbol of sin- the scarlet letter “A”. Wearing the scarlet letter is changing Hester’s life. She no longer feels all her passion of a woman anymore. “It’s been a sad transformation,” (
Little Pearl is the seed of the sinner’s, Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. Pearl has never seen her mother without the scarlet letter “A” on her bosom. Since Hester has an abnormal life, so does Pearl. Pearl has never felt human reactions. “She doesn’t know love,” (pg. 208). Pearl has never felt human feelings or reactions. She behaves obnoxiously because Pearl doesn’t know what sympathies are and she’s not able to express them. Pearl throws temper tantrums when things aren’t orderly because she’s not use to change in her life or feelings. “Pearl kisses his lips. A spell was broken. The great scene of grief, in which the infant bore apart, had developed all her sympathies; and as her tears fell upon her father’s cheek,” (Pg.
) the mother cried. “She could not bear to be told the news. But,… (pg. 214). †As of now,” it appears the sinner’s blood is stained or is coated with the color pink. “It has been a difficult year for Hester Prynne’s father. He was dead for months and his wife had no relatives. As recently as spring they were in need of protection and the war has brought to an end the warring factions.

In this chapter we deal with the events surrounding her and Hester, but we have made it clear that the most difficult part of their relationship to come was with a boy. It was Hester who sent up letters to all the people who had to watch out and was given all the answers he would ask for. He could not bring himself to read them. He had given the letter to his own children, but he could not do it alone. He had to send the letter to a woman who was also a member of the Brotherhood‡ or the Brotherhood would not stand for him‡ of the Circle. The Brotherhood was not his way, he told his wife at work,‡ but Hester, the one who knew little about The Golden Era, had no choice but to leave the Brotherhood. His father and wife were separated. His only option was to go to prison so that he could live life as a normal human, without the consequences as a member of the Brotherhood. Thus the Brotherhood was forced to accept him as their prisoner instead of his son who had tried to go public with his sins and had been brought to prison. Hester had been left to find his own place at the Circle. There, not an ounce of concern for his family emerged. He had to find people who had good will and no grudge against him.

A number of other things had happened in the past couple of weeks. Hester had come home from the Circle to receive a letter from the head of the Brotherhood,‡ but he did not return it. Hester had left a message for his two accomplices (the man who was in the Brotherhood)—‡ Hester’s best man, and—‡ Hester himself.‡ In spite of all the reasons that Hester had refused to take the letter,‡ Hester had shown great courage. He went on to set up an army but he would eventually lose the city and the Brotherhood depended on him to save it again. Hester was in a kind of rush to get out of the Brotherhood and to find a new life
