Abraham Maslow was born in New York City in April of 1908 and was the oldest of seven children. Abraham spent a lot of time reading when he was younger, and had decided early on in his life, that he wanted to change the world through science (Hoffan). He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1934 with a PHD in Psychology. Abraham is well known for his “Hierarchy of need” which is laid out in five different categories consisting of physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs.
Abrahams “Hierarchy of needs,” explains personal motivation and the things that we need most in life. Physiological needs, which Maslow had defined as our most basic needs, includes food, air, water and shelter. These are needs that every human being has and they need to be meet. Once, both the physiological and safety needs are satisfied, you can move to the next stage in the hierarchy which is belonging and love needs. The need to fill wanted and loved by family, a relationship, or belonging in a group. After you have meet the other needs, you move to the self-esteem need, the needs for responsibility, reputation, and respect from others. The last need in the hierarchy, which most people dont reach, is self-actualization, becoming the best that you can be, working your hardest and achieving all of your goals. Abrahams approach falls under the Contemporary perspective and is defiantly used today.
