Dropping like flies: the effects of dropping out of high school
On average, in the United States one out of every three students with drop out of high school according to studentsdrop.com. Unfortunately, due to the rate of high school student drop out, it is being labeled as an epidemic to many people and having multiple negative effects on their lives.
Topic 1: Young people who drop out of high school are unlikely to have the necessary skills needed to work in todays complex and technologically advanced workplace. The completion of high school, in most cases, is needed to further education to gain the necessary work skills. For this reason, general education is a bare minimum requirement in most jobs and careers. Many jobs in todays society call for additional schooling and training. Most careers require more than a general education; the worker must need advanced skills beyond high school. Many trade jobs require experience from apprenticeship programs that require high school and or college degrees. Skills learned through the first years of high school are not sufficient to lead you throughout the rest of your life.
Topic 2: The average earnings for a high school drop out are significantly less than a graduate. According to Nea.org a high school dropout earns about $260,000 less over his or her lifetime than a high school graduate. Stated in Semissourian.com, Adults without high-school diplomas typically make about 80 percent of the salaries earned by high school graduates. Due to the lack of education, it may be impossible for one to have an average or above average salary. This makes sense, why should someone who has completed high school and gone on to for or more additional years of college be paid equivalently to someone who dropped out in the ninth grade?
