The majority of all adults work. There are approximately 134 million workers in the United States Bureau of Labor. Millions of these individuals are raising children, managing households, and supporting business ran by their family. In society, adults are expected to be productive which in many cases is defined as working. Moreover, the journey to gaining employment can be an extensive and conflicting. Children’s play, education, and interacting are centered on heavily on preparing them to take on adult roles. Children teach their dolls, construct cities with trucks, and strike out invisible opponents. A child’s first occupation often include; mowing the lawn, babysitting, bagging groceries, and shoveling snow.

Currently almost all high schools students graduate from high school and continue on to college. This trend is expected to transition in the next five to ten years. Students who do not choose to continue work are more likely to have low skilled occupations. Many components contribute to an individual’s occupational success, hard work, innate ability, luck, availability, and opportunities. Rothman proposed that to be successful in an occupation an job seeker must learn how to think, act, and look like a member of the team Henceforth, the individuals needs to establish the ability to handle social relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and coworkers. In providing services to individuals with disabilities to obtain the skills they need to successfully gain employment as been recognized as the essential role of the rehabilitation counselors, in both public and private rehabilitation.
