Index/American HistoryDrivers Ed Homework – Hisory of Traffic LightsDrivers Ed Homework: Maclean MarlinHistory of Traffic LightsThe first traffic signal was invented in 1912 by a former policeman named Lester Wire but it however only had two lights, red and green. Also this first light had a buzzer to warn any pedestrians about the incoming transition. Another police officer named William Potts modified that design to include the the yellow light as well, this happened in 1920. The main differences between that light and the traffic lights of today are that our traffic lights have automatic timers, diode lights, and motion sensors to detect cars. The traffic light was mainly invented to lighten the load on the police who were doing the dangerous job of controlling busy intersections. The new lights allowed policemen to do other jobs such as ticketing and catching speeders. The first light was invented in Detroit and was implemented there first and following its success the design was patented and bought by General Electric. General Electric then went on to sell the traffic light across North America and the rest of the world.

History of TiresThe first tires were just basic wheels on charts many thousands of years ago and they evolved into the tires that we have today. Early rubber did not hold its shape like it does now until in 1839 when Charles Goodyear discovered the Vulcanization. Vulcanization makes rubber extremely firm and makes it very ideal for tires. These early tires were made out of solid rubber but they were very heavy and did not have a smooth ride however some tires are still made of solid rubber. Robert Thomson invented the first Pneumatic Tires which were rubber tires which had enclosed air to reduce vibration and to include traction. This however was not regarded as a good idea until 1888 when John Dunlop invented it again claiming he had no knowledge of the earlier invention. This time the public liked the idea and it became very popular. This is how the modern tire came to be.

History of the HeadlightThe first head light came out in 1898 on the Columbia Electric Car and they were a optional add on to the car. The headlights had a short lifespan and were hard to produce so they were very rarely used. In 1904 Acetylene lights caled “Prest-O-Lite” were offered by many car manufacturers and companies such as Peerless made the Electric Headlamps standard around 1908. Around 1912 the Cadillac linked the ignition and head lights together which created the modern Headlight system. New systems known as control and dip came around before the 1940’s but the main new change was the sealed beam headlights in the 40s. Bulb and sealed beam units were used across the world in the 60s until Halogen bulbs became the new industry standard. Now the modern Headlights use LED bulbs.

‟Hip Lights A new addition to the world was the ‘Hip Lights’ feature in 1904. At that time the headlight in a car was held by a wire cut in the tailpipe. A cable that wrapped around the wire gave it a special form, the clip holding the headlight to the roof. A special wire on the front of the headlight used to catch the hair above or below the neck. A special wire also used to hang from a string around the rear. Headlights were designed to work with other bulbs which were usually mounted by hand or a ladder. They also produced the new ‘HipLight’ Headlights for the Ford Focus. Headlights had a large cross wire at the top end for catching the headlight on, another that fell off when the front was turned. The first bulb to offer this power was the head-mount and head lamp that was offered around 1910. Headlights and a new light came out in 1908 through a joint partnership between American and Russian bulbs company, KW-VIR. Since 1915, the U.S. market for headlights has grown to over 40 billion dollars. Headlights are available in a few styles from a wide range of sizes to small sizes such as 5’8″ (without bulb), 6’4″ (with bulb) and 9’10” (with bulb). However, light was a big draw for the ‘HipLight’ when it first came out in 1914 and quickly became a popular fixture in automobile and car showrooms as an addition to headlights as well as in the back of cars.

Hip Lights A long time ago, a headlight was found in various models of automobiles such as the ‘Cars’ 2, 3 or 4. The headlight’s short life span was only 50 years in use. That’s when the headlight appeared on most vehicles with it’s short life span. To make headlights short, a ‘HIP LIGHT’ was developed to attach the wire below the head. This ‘HIP LIGHT’ is placed under the hood of the vehicle. With this headlight placed behind it a circuit breaker is introduced to keep the circuit running. The headlight will light up the car and stop the engine. Then to get back to the front, the electric power is sent back to the rear. You could now look at the rear headlights in the rear view mirror and see the headlights from the side. As a headlight will light up, to a lower angle, the headlights will move along. This is why headlights have a shorter life that could be considered the ‘short’ headlight. Since the headlights have a shorter life span and will use less energy to illuminate the front of the car, it takes more energy or for the driver who is still on time to notice the headlights again. Headlights do not work on the back of cars with a heavy headlight such as the Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang. Instead, it works in the center of the headlight. The ‘HIPLIGHT’ function was introduced when the headless electric light
