History of the Indian Institutes of Technology
The Indian Institutes of Technology refers to the seven IITs namely IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee. IITs are Institutions of national importance, established by an Act of Parliament. These institutes were set up after independence by the government of India for providing engineering and technological education of internationally recognized excellence.

Background of IITs
The existence of the Indian Institutes of Technology is due to the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who proposed establishing these institutions to provide trained technical personnel of international class to the nation who would act as leaders in technology for the newly born independent India. Nehru, being an enthusiast and patron of science, was clear that science and technology had a prominent role to play in modernising India and meeting the needs of its growing population. He envisioned that the IIT system would over time “provide scientists and technologists of the highest calibre who would engage in research, design and development to help building the nation towards self-reliance in her technological needs.”

Through the IITs, Indias first Prime Minister had hoped to create a highly educated technological force that would provide vital inputs for the massive dams, power plants and industrial ventures he wanted to build. It would help ensure that the country was self-reliant in the realm of science and technology.

Today the IITs have a reputation of being among the very best engineering institutions in the world. The IIT has become a globally recognised brand and the institutes are globally recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence, and are reputed for

•
the outstanding calibre of the students graduating from them
•
the dynamic and relevant academic programmes
•
contribution to national developmental projects through its research activities
•
contribution to man-power development and skill upgradation through continuing education programmes and other extension activities
Established as the College of Engineering in 1961, IIT Delhi was given the current name and declared an Institution of National Importance under the “Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963”.[8] It is located in Hauz Khas (New Delhi) and has an area of 1.3 kmÐІ (320 acres). It has 11 hostels and 26 departments, centres and schools. It has 426 faculty members and approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate students.

Each IIT is an autonomous university, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. They have a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, using the Joint Entrance Examination (popularly known as IIT-JEE) to select around 4,000 undergraduate candidates a year. Postgraduate Admissions are done on the basis of the GATE, JAM and CEED.
