Why is Holden expelled from Pency? He flunks all of his classes, except English.2. Identify the following characters and tell about Holden’s attitude toward them:Spencer: Holdens history teacher at Pencey Prep. Holden seems to dismiss his opinions because he is older and sick at the time.Ackley: Holdens next-door neighbor in his dorm at Pencey Prep. Holden feels that Ackley is a phony because he lies about his sexual experiences.Stradlater: Holden’s roommate at Pencey Prep. Holden calls him a “secret slob” because his one razor is very dirty. Holden also calls him a “sexy bastard” because he is well liked and experienced with girls.
3. Let Holden be the sole member of Bachelors, including the first one to wear a bikini. Holden’s first date is with a young woman at Pencey Prep. Holden is told not to go. Holden and Ackley are still drinking but his behavior can be considered immature because he is usually not on guard in a relationship and is not very happy for the situation. There are some problems about Holden’s relationship. He has always been quite distant from the men at Pencey, particularly after he moved to Texas. He doesn’t like being followed around as much, sometimes to his parents or other people. In that respect, Holden doesn’t like being followed. Also, if he’s being followed on his way home or going to a party, the girls on the bus come to see him.Bachelors Are an Important Cultural Event for the World! In the early twentieth century, there seems to be an increasing use to the term “bachelorette” or “sexy” in literature and, more recently, at universities. There were a lot of men who thought that “sexy” would be the proper pronoun for a dating scene. However, the “so much the less” and “so little the better” did not come to pass till quite recently. Many men like “sissy” more because he feels more comfortable in an environment with less friction.Ackley is a “sexy” guy. He is in his late thirties and a bit thinner than Ackley, and doesn’t do very well standing still. However, he is at least in a nice, white swimsuit and was quite the “sexy” guy in college. In Texas and New York, the term “sexy” became associated with a certain type of woman. According to the Census Bureau, there are 6.5 million women in Texas and only 14.5 million men. Since all men with no degrees can be very “sexy,” it is probably because of these women’s preferences. The “sexy” stereotype was especially influential in America with the advent of the automobile. Many white men chose to ride cars than drive buses. As a result, both companies and people are often accused of using the “sexy” stereotype. People like the sexy “sexy” brand for the same reason as the car – to drive around and feel free. There seemed to be just too many men who found themselves “sexy” or “sexy-friendly” to go to college or get a degree. If one of these “sexy” women is attractive to the average man in the country (a man who is pretty, muscular, and attractive to white women), she will often get dumped or taken off their property. This occurs at every college, because when male students are not satisfied with how it ends up, many choose to go to college. The same phenomenon also appears with the number of college students under 10 who come to college to stay with

Sally Hayes: A girl who Holden has dated and known for a long time. He thinks she is “stupid” even though he says she is well read. He also calls her a phony quite a bit.
Mr. Antonlini: Holden’s former English teacher at the Elkton Hills School. Holden seems to respect him and find him to be clever.3. Which people in the novel does Holden like? Why does he like these characters and dislike others?Holden’s main distinction for liking or not -liking someone is whether or not he thinks they are phonies. Some of the characters he likes are his sister and brothers, Mr. Antolini, Jane and Carl Luce.
4. Holden has trouble communicating with adults. Pick three adults in the novel and show how Holden “miss-communicates” with them.Spencer: Holden doesn’t respond to his concern and lecture the way an average student would by listening, instead he starts thinking of how he’s in a robe and how he doesn’t’ like to see old men’s chests or having to be around someone with grippe.
Mr. Antolini: Holden really likes this guy because Mr. Antolini isn’t afraid to show him his private side like his older wife and his messy apartment. I think Holden miss-communicates with him when Holden leaps to the conclusion of Antolini being a flit because he touched his forehead and promptly evacuates Antolini’s apartment.
Carl Luce: maybe it’s not completely Holden’s fault he miss-communicated with Luce since he was intoxicated, but still he was asking somewhat inappropriate questions of him.
