Homosexuality Case
As for homosexuality, Americans are more conservative than Europeans because the people who believe in God in America are far more than those in Europe. Many conservative Christians think that the marriage is an issue of religion to some extent. God creates man and woman just for them to build a family and carry on the family line. However, homosexuality violates God’s will, and thus it is often defined as “wrong deviant behavior of humans”. Most people that oppose the homosexuality often join in religious rites, are aged or associated with the Republican Party or live in the south of United States. So the largest barrier against homosexuality is the religious taboo. The religion also influences many other aspects. Though people become more and more open to homosexuality, most of the homosexuality supporters are young men, those who do not join in religious rites, are associated with the Democratic Party or live in the north of the United States or New England.
As shown from a survey made by CBS in 2004, only 22% of American citizens agreed the legalization of homosexual marriage while 73% opposed it. In most people’s mind, the homosexual marriage is strictly distinguished from civil union, which provides the homosexual partners with certain rights to unite together. Although only less than one forth Americans agree that the homosexual partners should be allowed to be married, more than half of Americans support that the homosexual partners who hope to stay with each other for a long time should form the legal civil union. 40% of respondents think that it is not reasonable to legally support the civil union of homosexual partners. However, along with social development, more and more people agree that the equal work rights should be given to homosexual persons, and the homosexual marriage has been accepted gradually.
