Hotel CaliforniaThe “dark desert highway” the man travels represents the passageway to heaven. On his way to heaven he feels a cool wind in his hair, he feels alive once again; he senses a “warm smell of colitas,” a smell that brings him delight as he transcends, “rising up through the air.” “Up ahead in the distance” of the dark passageway of heaven is “a shimmering light, his head grew heavy and his sight grew dim” as his eyes and brain grew accustomed to this newfound light. Before him, an angel “stood in the doorway” as mission bells from houses of worship rung below. The man thought to himself “that this could be Heaven or this can be Hell” as he stood at the doorway to Heaven awaiting judgement and clear passage. The angel “lit up a candle” and showed him the way through the doors. “There were voices down the corridor” in which the man heard the angels sing “Welcome to the Hotel California,” his ideal heaven. The angels sing its “such a lovely place” filled with such lovely faces. Obviously there is “plenty of room at the Hotel California,” a metaphor the man has made for Heaven which is boundless, “any time of the year, you can find it here.” The angels mind is Tiffany twisted with Mercedes bends because she has found the luxury shes always desired here in “Hotel California.” The angel is also surrounded by “a lot of pretty, pretty boys that she calls friends” since everyone in Heaven is pleasant and friendly.”They dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat” prespiring on their skin, some “dance to remember” their time here on Earth and “some dance to forget.” The man “called up the Captain” who is the man in charge at the metaphoric “Hotel California” and he requested his favorite wine, the “Captain” replied “we havent had that spirit here since 1969,” referencing to not coming across someone with his overall character and response upon entering Heaven since the end of Woodstock. The angels voices are still calling from far away, they “wake you up in the middle of the night,” just so you can hear their melody.”What a nice surprise” that everyone is ironically “livin it up at the Hotel California, youd better “bring your alibis” if you expect to gain entry into “Hotel California.” The “mirrors on the ceiling” represent the one way mirror in Heaven where they look down upon us; the “pink champagne on ice” shows the extent of luxury there.
