They have been struggling for centuries fighting biased assumptions, harmful stereotypes, and of irrational fears. In the 1800âs, people with disabilities were considered meager, tragic, pitiful individuals and unfit for anything to contribute to the society. People look at them as worthless and abnormal. They were forced to enter institutions and asylums. They were âpurifiedâ or segregated from the ânormalâ ones. It still continued until World War I when veterans with disabilities expected that the US government will provide rehabilitation in exchange of their service to the nation.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the first president with disability, was a great advocate for rehabilitation of people with disabilities, but still operated under the notion that a disability was an abnormal, shameful condition, and should be medically cured or fixed. But despite of all the advancements made towards independence they still donât have access to many in the society. They were underestimated when it comes to work.By the 1960âs, civil society movements begun to take place. The people with disabilities are starting to get the right and equality that they want. In the 1970âs, the US Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) happened. It provides equal opportunity for employment within the federal government and others. One approach will be to take an historical analysis broken down into three parts.â Selvinda 2015Life during pre-colonial era could be described as war-like. It was survival. There were few numbers of disabilities by this era. Congenital conditions such as missing limbs or part of the body is made to mention of in folklore. Though we can say that disabilities were accepted here. Colonization came and changed the tribes gradually. Strong men go and look for jobs. Medical services and hygiene started to improve.
