HVARIOUS SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND NUTRITION INTERVENTIONS BY UN, OTHER GOVERNMENTS AND NGOS
UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
OCHA mission is to alleviate human suffering through the coordination of effective and principled humanitarian action; advocating on behalf of affected people; collecting, analyzing and sharing information with partners and the public, and mobilizing and organizing humanitarian funding. Every year, OCHA develops the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan (YHRP) together with humanitarian UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, as well as national and international NGOs, which guides all humanitarian action based on the humanitarian principles, and identifies needs and priorities.The strategic objectives of the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan are to save lives, protect civilians, promote equitable access to assistance, and to ensure that humanitarian action supports resilience and sustainable recovery are attained.
UNITED NATONS MIGRATION AGENCY
Displaced persons and affected communities in Yemen continue to face increased insecurity, limited freedom of movement, restricted access to services (shelter, food, water, health and education) and a lack of livelihood opportunities. Torrential rains and flash floods triggered by two rainy seasons, March to May and July to October, have the potential to be devastating, compounding the damage caused by storms throughout the year.
The UN Migration Agency (IOM) is working with communities in Yemen to help them better prepare for or prevent future disasters, while also carrying out its emergency response, early recovery, and stabilization activities.
INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION (ILO)
ILO brings together governments, employers and workers representatives of 187member states to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
Yemen joined ILO in 1965 which has helped the country to make officially 30 conventions.
The following are the interventon roles of ILO in Yemen:
Helping build peace and resilience by creating jobs and income opportunities, enhancing employability and strengthening institutional capacity in conflict-affected areas.
Enhance local institutional and stakeholder capacity to improve the labour governance through dialogue, participation and policy development; as well as
Creating immediate jobs and income opportunities by promoting the impact of cash-for-work programs so as to provide options for on–the-job training, skills development, entrepreneurship and self-employment.
Provide technical support kept to Yemeni constituents such as government institutions as well as workers’ and employers’ organizations.
WORLD FOOD PROGRAM
The WFP is carrying out the following tasks for nutrition and socio-economi interventions in Yemen
Immediate, Integrated and Sustained Response to Avert Famine in Yemen
To avert the looming catastrophe in Yemen, WFP is providing an integrated package of food and nutrition assistance with complementary activities implemented through agriculture, livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and health partners.
WFP developed a detailed operational plan to support the gradual transition and full operationalization of the new emergency operation (EMOP), with improved targeting, partnerships and an integrated assistance approach.
Emergency Food Assistance to the Food Insecured and Conflict Affected People in Yemen
WFP assisted up to four million affected people by March 2016 through general food assistance in the locations most affected by the crisis, especially in areas classified as Phase 4 and 3 by the IPC, through direct food transfers and through an innovative approach using food vouchers in coordination with the private sector supply chain network in order to respond to the increased food and nutrition needs. In addition, WFP has provided specialized nutritional products to treat acute malnutrition in children under five and in pregnant and lactating women, as well as to prevent malnutrition in children 6-23 months. Through an emergency school feeding intervention, WFP will provide daily snacks to primary school children to encourage continuation of education during the crisis.
